fly wheel and counter weight removal

having a bit of trouble removing the flywheel from one engine and the counter weights fromanother engine...

already got the big **** nut off..

but cant seem to get the actual flywheel to come off...
any one know an easy way to do it?
(ive been told to put screws in the two holes and twist.. but they're right above a seal.. wouldnt this damage the seal?)

-Cheers

how i've done it: loosen the nut to about 1/4 in. off the fw, wedge a crowbar behind the fw, then strick sharply directly across from there with a big rubber hammer. may take couple or so blows, but it will jump right off. as for the counterweight, this will be alittle more difficult since the flex plate isn't thick enough to get a good wedge against it. good luck.

I'm trying to disassemble an engine. I've taken flywheels and counterweights off before. This one is giving me trouble. I've put a torch to the counterweight and put ice in the pilot bearing hole whilst prying with a crow bar and ringing the counter weight with a hammer - still not budging. Right now the motor is sitting on end with a liberal dose of PB Blaster soaking the taper/taper fit. Any other ideas?

I hope there's nothing wrong with resurrecting this old thread. I did a search and this particular thread came up and it was spot on for what I needed to know.

DO NOT PRY AT THE FLYWHEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT PRY AT THE FLYWHEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT PRY AT THE FLYWHEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT PRY AT THE FLYWHEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT PRY AT THE FLYWHEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

smack the weighted surface of the flywheel with a hammer. a 3lb sledge works just fine. it may take a couple of whacks but the flywheel will come righ off. you may want to leave the nut threaded on a few threads to ensure that the flywheel doesnt come rolling off of the engine and dameage itself or something else. same applies to the counterweight. remove the flexplate from the counterweight before striking it. six bolts hold the two together.

Agreed, I wouldn't pry it either, just smack it a few times with a hammer and off it comes. Soaking it with PB blaster is always a good thing too....

I knew this would come in handy, lol

I think it might actually be Pineapple Racing, not Atkins, but I really honestly don't know for sure. Whoever can tell me where the vid comes from wins one (1) internet, lol.

I have just the counterweight on. The aluminum flywheel has already been removed. I looked at the FSM today. They have a good recommendation. I just need to find the right tool.

I was using the prybar to exert a little outward pressure while taping on the counterweight.

Done wrong, they are impossible to get off... I had a machine shop give up on getting my original flywheel off, first time I rebuilt.

Done right (as shown in the video, or using hardened bolts in the thru-holes to tension it against plates put underneath)... spung! Comes right off.

all i have ever done is wack the counterweight or flywheel with a 3lb sledge hammer once or twice and they're off, no questions asked. use seafoam to help if you feel the need.
