Confused at getting codes?

Alright I have heard a lot of people say stuff on how to get codes out of the comp. Now what the hell do you do? I know it isn't all that hard and I was wondering if you need to ground the wire? It doesn't seem like you would but if you do please explain?> Haynes Manuel is a little backwards so can someone help me on this touchy subject>?

yes...all you need is a ground wire. make sure the car is totally off. pop the hood locate the initial set connector. it should be a small green plug on the left side of the battery (it has 2 pin holes in it). take the grounding wire and plug one end into that connector, and connect the other end of the wire to the negative battery terminal (or part of the fender).

now, go in the car. put the key in and turn the ignition till the idiot lights come on. (don't turn the car on, though). when the idiot lights come on, if you have stored codes the check engine light will come on for a sec then disappear. then it will come back and flash the codes at you. like for instance if you have a code 32 it will flash like this

"----- ----- ----- - - " like 3 longer holds (10 each) then 2 shorter holds (1 each)

scott89T2 has the code listing on his site (www.1300cc.com)...so you can cross reference the results that u get.

u DO have an 89-91 model right? i don't think you can check the codes on the 86-88 FC's

good luck man!

Ground the initial set connector, a single wire connector found near the leading ignition coil. This tells the ECU that it is in diagnostic mode. Turn on the ignition all the way, but do not start the car. The ECU will commence to blink out any stored codes over and over again. Check this web site to read/identify the codes. http://home.rmci.net/panther/ecu_codes.htm
