Came across this during my searches on MSF. I figured it would be useful here.

If for whatever reason you do not want to and/or do not like to use the OEM Mazda filter (too expensive, too hard to find, too small, etc...) the best aftermarket oil filters are, in no particular order; NAPA Gold, Wix (same as NAPA Gold) or Mobil 1. If the oil filter is still being mounted to the engine and not remote mounted, make sure that the unit you use has an anti-drain back valve.
Personally I prefer the largest oil filter I can fit on the engine. For the RX7 I use the NAPA Gold 1568. As always, YMMV

hmmm I did not know that. I figured a filter was a filter. The point was to show the different internals of each brands filters. I ASSUMED it was safe to say they are the same across the board of each size they offer.

BTW, full disclosure: I don't use the 'correct' size on my RX7 fleet.
I use Wix 51344.
Why? It's big (filter area). It fits (threads, oring and pressure relief psi etc) It's good (people who have time cut them open and say so). It's a reasonable price at $7-ish. Orielly and Autozone stock it.
Dammit. I got suck right in.

When I worked part time at Advance Auto Parts we took a bunch of filters and sliced them in half with a band saw. House brands SUCK. K&N, Mobile, Motorcraft, and Bosche are all the best.
