Cold start disappeared...?

The car is a 87 TurboII. And the COLD START WARM UP has disappeared completely.

She starts and holds a VERY low idle or stalls unless I warm her up.

Any ideas where to even start...?

My recommendation is to check the TPS. It happened to me right before my TPS failed.

The cold start process is temp related. You have a temp switch at the bottom of the radiator (driver's side). This sensor reads the coolant temp. If it's above a certain threshold (close to 60 degrees) then the cold start will not engage and the car behaves more like a warm start.

Seamoan, I did the TPS check, throttle screw, variable resistor circle jerk already & again for the umteenth time. Although the TPS was out a considerable amount. 1.21 and wouldn't adjust lower then 1.04. Also sprayed an abundance of starter fluid everywhere w direct hits... No stumbling.

Satch, There's nothing. Not even a slight raise to 1.5K rpms. Is that normal...?

Thanks for the quick replies.

What does it start off at? If it starts off at close to 800 rpm or so then the thermovalve could possibly be stuck in the extended position, which would press down on the rear throttle linkage, which keeps the throttle plates closed, which keeps the idle speed low.

First start she barely stays running, 200ish & shakey. Second start with a few blips of the pedal to prevent from stalling... All of the sudden something kicks in and she holds at 800ish, w no stalling problems all the way to work (12 miles).

Today's temps are around 75*

Every now and then w warm running temps & stopping at a light or something, rpms drop low but no stall and then again something catches and she smooths out to 800-900 again...?

Try cleaning your BAC, check wiring to it, and check the coolant switch on the bottom of the radiator as stated by Satch.

If the coolant is above 63 degrees pin 1H of the ECU will read below 1.5 volts otherwise it reads close to 12 volts. When it reads 12 volts that should initiate the cold start high rev to 3k for 16 seconds. As stated, the BAC might be problematic in addition to the air bypass valve or a sticky thermovalve.

I thought it was thermowax?

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...5/#post9524788

My bet is something is stuck on the thermowax cold start system.

I haven't seen this mentioned, but, make sure it is in neutral when it is started. I know it sounds silly, but, that is the way it works.

the thermowax is fully mechanical and by itself should prevent this issue, then there is the AWS solenoid that opens for the 3000rpm accelerated warmup which is activated by various temp sensors.

so either someone has tweaked some things or you have multiple issues going on.
