clutch type lsd
clutch type lsd
i was wondering if any of the stock fc rx7s came with clutch type lsd's. i know most turbo II's come with viscous but do any come with a clutch type. thanks for your help.
clutch is definetely better. when the lsd oil on the viscous heats up it becomes a open diff. so its a little better then open diff but not really. clutck type always kicks
Trending Topics
main advantage of clutch over viscous is:
clutch type always grabs regardless, viscous only grabs after the differential has started to spin so there is a loss of traction off the line.

if this one works its several things about the lsd's that i ahve asked questions about

" The Zenki clutch-type LSD's are known to wear out within 30,000 - 50,000 miles."
this statement is a little misleading, under 'harsh' driving conditions the clutches may wear out but my car with the original diff with 163k miles on it still has full lock on both axles, those figures represent the low end of the spectrum for those who read it.

If a car has LSD:
86-88 had the clutch-pack LSDs', 89-91 had the Viscous LSD's.
You can swap all LSD's within series (they swap directly across), but you can only use an N/A LSD in an N/A rear end, and a turbo LSD in a turbo rear-end.
SO, yes, you can change out your S5 viscous LSD to an S4 clutch-pack LSD.
im not 100% sure but thats wat i heard. cant u feel it though. you know wat. do a burnout a couple of times and have someone stand behind the car to see if both tires keep spinnin at all times. you cant just do it once cuz the viscous will work till the fluid heats up.

alright thanks for your help scathcart. ive been asking these questions to make sure i didnt get screwed, cuz i bought a clutch type from a na for a 115$ with the casing and everything
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that visous LSDs only work when the fluid heats up. When it heats up, it expands and causes some plates to contact one another and that locks the diff. Sorry for the vague descriptions but its the best I can remember at the moment.

thats right, but like it was said before, too much heat or abuse ( ie drifting event) and it will be worthless. at the same time, drive any car with an aftermarket diff (1.5 way, 2 way) and you will feel the difference between that and a s4 clutch type. just cause its clutch type dont think its the best thing in the world.
