Clutch engages close to the floor.. ARGH!

Okay, I have searched hundreds of threads and have come up with very little as to why my clutch engages so close to the floor. Its getting downright irritating.

So first off, this is what I have done:

SS Clutch line
Relaced clutch fork (pedal to master cylinder)
Adjusted freeplay out so far that I doubt there are more then 3 threads left in the clutch assy

Now I am guessing either bent clutch fork, or crappy hydraulics. What I DID notice, is that there is supposed to be a bushing in the clutch pedal, where the pin for the clutch fork goes through. There was a little sliver of bushing left in my pedal..

Any ideas?

I doubt this is the problem but make sure your floormat (if you have one) isn't jammed up there too far. When my car does this it feels like the clutch engages much closer.

Or your slave is just messed up. Well if all comes to fail just drop the tranny and take a look at your fork.

isnt the clutch adjustable? if so, it might just be an adjustment.

The clutch is adjustable, but someone would have had to "adjusted it", to get it out of adjustment. It's doesn't go out on it's own. As previously advised, the hydraulics are the usual suspects.

an ACT H/D pressure plate is a sure fire way to tell if your clutch hydraulics are working!!!!

I put the 460 ft/Lb one in my car and.. HOLY ****.... I had to adjust my pedal AND get a braided SS hose before it felt rigght again.. (I had to get the HOSE so that it would disengage... then I adjusted to where i wanted it!!)

Slave cylinders are CHEAP BTW... (as far as Mazda parts go!!!)

also, bleed the system and change thye clutch fluid...

Okay, few things here:

I know how to adjust the clutch, and its at the outermost limit of adjustment. Still engages on the floor.

System is bled and clean.

It IS an ACT Pressure plate

It HAS a Racing Beat SS clutch line

Slave is new

Master is new

Come on guys and girls, give me SOME credit!

*edit* Upon further consideration, the master is a bit old... Hmm..

Well this wont help you, buuuuuuut.

When I had an aftermarket/stock style clutch on my n/a it engaged fairly far out. As soon as I switched over to an ACT s/s with HD plate, it engaged just barely off the floor. Maybe it's something with ACT? My friend's DSM with an ACT xtreme pplate did the same thing.

Welcome to the club, fun isn't it?

I got used to it fairly fast, now I find myself burning the clutch on cars I'm not used to at first, until I remember theirs engage further out.

Another ACT user here. S/S + XPP. Clutch engagement is very close to the floor as well.

Reach down and pull the pedal up with your hand as far as it will go. Then try to press it again with your foot. Does it feel any better? If the system was improperly bled then you should notice a difference when you do this.

is it possible that the act clutch just happens to be a bit thicker than a stock clutch? that would cause the pedal to have to be pushed down farther to get the clutch to disengauge. seems several others have your same problem. i would suspect thicker clutch disc.

Well, along with that problem, I noticed something else..

There is a bushing that goes in between the pivot pin, and the clutch pedal for the for that actuates the master cylinder. Mine was barely a sliver of bushing material left, and I can ASSURE YOU that this is causing some slop in my clutch pedal. My guess is this is also adding to the force it requires to actuate my pedal.

So the question here is.. Where to get that bushing? Hmmm.....

Sorry to bring back an old post but I am buying a car that has the same symptoms as many people here. The guy said it has a new clutch, but I didn't ask him what kind. Guess I will talk to him about that. However, did the issue ever get resolved? Is it just the clutch/flywheel combo that caused it?

By the way, the car is a 89 Turbo II
