clicking under the dash

ive been having a throttle problem lately, and ive started to notice everytime its happening, theres this clicking under my dash, im so frustrated right now, because sometimes it runs great, and others it runs like ******* ****, dying every 2 minutes, or even worse, the throttle cuts out and back on, imagine driving down a 45mph street in high second or low 3rd, and letting off the gas and then stomping on it repeatedly, just like that

ive tried to look under there several times to see wtf is going on, im thinking maybe a wire is grounding out? but ive got no idea where the clicking is coming from, and i can never get any light under there, and me being 6'4'' 280 or so, i can barely get under the steering wheel

i thought it was my tpi, but im not so sure now, another thing in accordance with the problem, sometimes ill go to shut her off, and shell keep running until i turn my headlights off, and tonight something else started, ill shut my headlights off, and my dash lights will stay on, but dim just a little, which is why im thinking its electrical and such, but its got me so ******* frustrated i cant even think

anyone have any thoughts?

well, the last time I thought I heard a clicking under the dash, turns out it was a wire groudning out. Then I went aroudn this one corner and it started smoking and melting and causing havoke and smoking up the inside of my car so i couldn't see and then I grabbed the wire and yanked it out and it burned my hand bad the I bailed out of the car; it was quite the spectical. I dont know if that helps at all, but thats all I remember about clicking under the dash

i fixed the clicking today, was a bad relay,

but my car is still dying unexpectedly, i drove home about 10 miles, starting it, giving it gas, taking off, then pushing in the clutch and cruising till i was going too slow, then starting it again and repeating, poor ******* car

The only time I heard a clicking under the dash on driver's side, it was cause by my alternator. It was dead and it didn't recharge. The relay was clicking at low rpm and all warning idiot lights light up at the same time. Verify that your alt is recharging correctly.

my idiot lights didnt work till yesterday when i fucked with the wiring, the only time they all light up is when the car is in the on position before i start it up, i dont think its my alternator, my battery has only died once since i had it (a month or so)and that was caused by the shotty wiring job my friend did for my stereo, i unhooked all that such

i replaced this relay right under the dash by the gas pedal, and the clicking has gone away, but the cars still dying, so today im gunna check the voltages from my tps, and see if it needs replacing, or adjusting or such

Man, from the mental picture I get of what your wiring may look like, it could be anything. But...Headlight switch being bad popped in my head as I was reading this, UNLESS someone has installed some aftermarket lighting using the original headlight and/or lighting circuits; then I would look there first...

Which relay was bad? The circuit opening relay, beside the steering column up under there?

so i went to measure the ohms and volts of my tps, the ohms seemed alright, but something wasnt right with the volts, and when id adjust the tps adjuster screw, the volts didnt change a bit, id love to be able to just get another tps, but they cost too damn much for me right now, and the pick n pull i went to didnt have any s4's

how can i test if my tps is just plain out bad?

If you feel adventurous, test it at its input to the ECU. This verifies the whole damn circuit is good (or bad). Use this:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...leshooting+ECU

Or, if you're not so adventurous, just backprobe the TPS plug at the green/ red wire (pos lead) and ground (neg lead). Warm the car until the 750 idle is reached, then shut her down. Turn the key to on (not start). Should have 1 volt there. Adjust the screw as necessary to attain 1 volt. Keep the meter connected, and move the throttle linkage through its range. Watch the meter for any dead spots.

did all that, i got it into specs, and took it for a drive, the idle was eratic but it was driving pretty good, until the engine caught on fire

it was running fine, then it died, so i tried startin it a few times and riding the throttle then coasting cuz i was just down the block from home, but i pulled over to let it sit for a few minutes luckily, i was gunna test the ohms to see if they were in specs still and i realized there was a fie down by my exhaust on that plate, i was parked out in front of house so i grabbed their hose and put it out,

then i realized the overflow tube was broken and coolant had sprayed everywhere, the ****** who onwed it before me broke off the tube that connects to that neck right there, and just jbwelded the ******* tube to the neck, so i screwed a screw into the hole and took it home, so i guess my tps is fine, but it pisses me off cuz i dont know whats wrong now, gotta replace that neck, maybe the ecus soldering got old and broke off or some ****, will have to check that and a few other things

Glad you got the fire put out. Just for future reference, most flammable liquid fires should not be put out with a water hose, that just tends to spread the liquid and the flames. Get a Halon extinguisher in the car for that kind of thing

Sounds like you have a little work to do...

ill have to do so, i never bought one before because i was afraid of looking ricey, but now that i have a reason, im gunna buy 4 nos fire extinguishers, and strap them in highly visible places all over my car

ill make sure to pick one up though, didnt know that about water and such, i dont know, ill replace the neck off the radiator, probably take it to mr mazda, i dont have the tools to do much more than basic work =/

used to have tons, but they were my brothers, he became a tweaker, and all his tools started dissapearing, i dont even have a screwdriver, luckily my brother still has a nice drill, ive got an assortment of sockets, and a 1/2 inch wrench with no adapters

my friend brian is a mechanic tho, so he helps me out a lot, dont know if youve played midnight club3: dub edition, but theres a company in the game called New Dimensions, he works for them, so i get to bring my car into his shop every now n then, sticks out like a sore thumb tho, cuz its all high end european cars

what really pisses me off about this situation is i just put exhaust and suspension on it =T shouldnt have spent my money so soon

i guess it sorta needed suspension and exhaust though, one muffler had fallen off, and the shocks and struts with compress with just gravity, so i was pretty much just riding on stock springs, sounded like a bed at a ***** house
