for us guys who have not upgraded out intake and still have stock... yesterday i just took the whole top off and i put four dabs of gule in each corner... and since i got rid of the whole stock air routing system.. i noticed a diff right away!! try it..

 

4 dabs of glue where? got rid of the routing system? CAn you go into detaial. Pics mabye?

Hopefully by the time the filter gets dirty, he will have saved the $30 for a K&N...

 

In the future if you want to getto speed the airbox, you may want to just drill some 3/4" holes in the top of the cover, near the fender and near the headlight.

That way you still have improved flow, but the air cleaner doesn't suck in so much water when it rains, and the filter won't leak around as much as it will when glueing the corners down

my friend did this with his 2nd gen talon too,,it works pretty good,,i already have an intake system so i won't know weather it works or not

 

you could also put screening over the holes for the bigger particles...

 

just get a frickin' cone filter

 

I've heard of K&N, but never Frickin. Is that a brand of filter I can order through Mazdatrix?

 

just take a drill, drill a 3/4" hole in the top where it says "MAZDA" then you take a jig saw cut out where the inside part ( where the ribs are not) then trim it up with a file to make it look good. Much better. the box and filter keep there integrity and you can just dromp in the K&N. Ther is another step that is a bit more involved for the uder the filter spot to improve flow. if any one is interesed...

 

whats this trick... i dont think water would be too big a deal, I dont see it getting into the filter that easly... just a cheep trick for now untill we get a cone filter... just trying to help out my best..

 

Isn't the stock intake system a cold-air intake? Why would you want to drill holes in the lid...it would just end up sucking in hot air from the engine bay. BTW...most intakes will only provide a negligable increase in horsepower; I would rather upgrade my exhaust which would provide better gains.

Of course, since you only put a dab of glue in each corner, the dirty air is still being sucked in at the sides of the filter. Put the stock airbox lid back on, and cut a huge hole in it. Same effect, but this one won't kill your engine.

Because a cheap stainless or paper cone filter allows considerably more garbage (read- sand/dirt) into the intake than even the crappy stock filter. More dirt means more engine wear and a dirty AFM

More engine wear means earlier engine repair required, a dirty AFM means less accurate monitoring of the flow, which means lean or rich situations both of which are deadly to a rotary.

They are just trying to get H/P without paying for it.

And ZachSpazz is correct, if you just cut a big hole in it as Aaron Cake suggests or you drive without the airbox cover you will draw in warm engine air, just as you would for a cone filter without a cold air box. Warm engine air kills most any increase in HP (except the psychological increases from you moding your car- "IE it feels faster")
