That is a check valve, but it's nothing to do with the brakes. They're used in a few places like the double-throttle system and the twin-scroll control system. There are no check valves in the braking system.

hmm.. some people here in vegas told me that i needed a new check valve from my brake booster to the intake manifold. whats happening with my car is, right as soon as i boost the brakes dont work at all.. then after a few seconds they start working.. what causes that problem??

Oops sorry, my bad. There is a check valve in the brake booster vac hose, but that's not it. That booster check valve is inside the hose. Remove the hose and blow throught it in both directions. You should only be able to blow through it one way. If you can blow both ways, replace the check valve.

the old valve it had on it wasnt a one way valve.. i was able to blow thru it both ways. so i took it off.. replaced it with that green and white one.. now the brakes dont work as good as they used to.. it fixed the problem with them not working AT ALL right after boost.. and the car is a lot more responsive. but now they dont work all that great.. is it because thats not the right check valve? so the check valve fo the braking system is actually inside the hose? i called meyers import parts, checkers, pep boys, and autozone.. they knew what it was but said they werent able to get it. i called mazda directly and the guy didnt know what the hell it was.. lol. so he said they didnt have it

its probably isthe check valve. Check valve for the brake booster is to allow vacuum towards the engine. If that check valve is faulty it will send air into the brake booster and you probably wont be able to push down on the brake, or its hard. Brake boosters work by vaccume, so if there is none the brakes will be harder to push.
As boost occurs, it probably sending air from the intakle manifold to the brake booster line, which its not suppose to.
The booster check valve should be mounted near the booster itself near the firewall I think

ok.. this is how i installed it.. the vacuum from the engine is supposed to be sucking vacuum from the brake booster correct? the arrow is facing away from the brake booster and towards the intake manifold. but the brakes still arent working to well. do i need to bleed the system? or is it because this isnt the right valve???

Sorry, the checkvalve is not located where your picture shows a checkvalve. It is located where my attached jpg shows it.
Some folk think because a turbo engine is put in a non turbo that you have to install a checkvalve in the brake booster line. I've not a clue why they thought the n/a didn't have a checkvalve. It's much like people thinking that the cruise control on a turbo engine needs to have an electric cruise motor instead of a vacuum assist one. Nutty at best.
And darn, I just missed being able to take a shot at the NZCONVERTIBLE for what he said in his first post. Darn near ruined my day missing that remark.Oh well, some other day.

hmm.. so the check valve is actually inside the hose?? the problem im having is that my car has none of those metal hoses.. it just has the rubber hose that runs directly from the brake booster to the intake manifold.. with the check valve in between the two. does it really make that big of a difference on where its located at along that line that it wont make my brakes work as good???

The size of that check valve looks *Puny* compared to the stock one. I'd go to the wreckyard and obtain a real deal brake booster checkvalve.
I *think* they put the original one closer to the booster for safety reasons. Less hose to punture b/t the checkvalve and the booster.
