Talking Cheating The SMOG TEST! made simple.

So before I begin explaining how it is done I would just like to say, do this as a last resort. There have been no reported problems with this method and it also seems to work in piston cars too, but its requires you to run denatured alcohol which is obviously not gasoline, so its probably not the best thing to run in your engine Always first make sure that all of your emissions equipment are on the car and working, and try it with that.

Ill first give the condition of my car so you guys have a reference as to what kind of car passed.
My car: RX-7 FC3S 1986 S4

Mods: On engine and emissions related equipment.

HKS intake

Small air filter for Airpump

some after market spark wires

And an engine rebuild with less then 10K miles on it. Total mileage is 174K

Royal purple 20W-50 motor oil and filter

Other then that its all mostly stock
(look at my pics for reference)

Problems: Ridiculously high HC and slightly high CO

-It was running with around 300+ PPM of HC (Hexane) passing is 141PPM at 15 MPH and 116PPM at 25MPH

-And was very close to not passing on CO (carbon monoxide)

-Pipe connecting the airpump to CAT was broken so I fixed that.

THE SMOG TEST CHEAT!

What you will need:

-One gallon of Denatured Alcohol. DO NOT get a methyl/methanol based one it will eat away at your seals and or gaskets, get a ethyl/ethanol based one, I bought a gallon at Home depot in the paint section for about 14bucks.

-A gas container filled with gas (this is not required but its comes in handy after the test)

STEP ONE : Drive around for about 30mins or more to fully warm up your engine and expel all of the bad start up gases from your system. Run your gas tank down as low as you can safely do without getting stranded and get to the SMOG station.

STEP TWO: Once there DO NOT turn off your engine. I had a little more then two gallons of regular in the tank so ended up a 25-33% content of alcohol. Its been tried at many varying percentages, any where in between 25% to 100% I was aiming for 50% but I still passed. Its has been observed that the engine stumbles sometimes but mine seemed to have no change at all. I also poured in the alcohol with the engine running. You may want to drive it around the block to get it mixed up inside the tank.

STEP THREE : Pray that it passes.

STEP FOUR : When done with the test use that extra tank of gas to fill her up a bit and get to the nearest gas station ASAP and fill the tank full.

My results

HC 139 PPM at 15 MPH- Passing is 141PPM (kinda close but compared to 300+ is a big improvement and I only used about 25% alcohol)

HC 65PPM at 25MPH - Passing is 116PPM (great numbers here)

CO 0.11PPM at 15MPH - Passing is .86PPM (this is really nice, its actually lower then the ave passing numbers at 0.13PPM for other cars)

CO 0.07PPM at 25MPH - Passing is .66PPM (Thats right! 0.07 way below the allowed limit! and ave of .11PPM)

Well this is all based on what I have read on various forums and also EXACTLY what I have done.

Big thanks to Funkjaw for letting me put my RX on the sniffer a couple times!!! You are a great man!

I posted this for the people who need their cars to pass and cant pass with their emissions equipment still attached, and it has been written to use as a last resort. Its also because Ive seen alot of unorganized threads on the subject so I thought I might go ahead and clear up alot of the fog concerning the methods involved. So it would help guide people away from doing a bad or more risky way of cheating it. such as messing around with the airpump valves or fuel mixtures.

cant you just use half 85 octane and half e85 to achieve the same results? this year when i try and get my car to pass emissions im going to empty it completely of gasoline and run e85. well see how it reacts.

..you do know that IF you do not Fill the rank after with FRESH gas thet the Denatured alcohol will EAT out of your fuel system..
JRAT posted this same method years ago.it works, but you have to Know WTF you are doing.
I still like the GET a NEW CAT solution, and have your emissions intact when going for an Etest.that is the Besrtway to pass!

Yeah I mentioned to make sure to try to pass with the emissions equipment intact and working first, I also noted to fill up the gas tank all the way full in step 4.

I posted this mainly to help the relatively new members to pass if they cannot pass with their smog parts intact, or who cant afford to get it fixed.

Denatured alcohol is usually made with a ethyl base and is basically ethanol so I imagine it would produce similar results.

Its entirely possible for California Emission representatives to be surfing our forums and this post could get you in a lot of trouble.

We understand that you just got your first car we're happy for you and think it's great it's an RX-7. We would also like to congratulate you on passing your first emissions test but please don't post about "cheating" the emissions test.

much easier to make the ACV work, and just have a car that passes, less worry.

mine is cleaner than yours, and there's no trick

it does 4-6 HC's, .002 CO... no tricks, it just delivers air pump air to the exhaust ports like its supposed too

if your hc (hydrocarbon btw) is high, then start looking at fuel system pressure and if your tps is tuned properly.
your co (monoxide) is slighty high.
so, just looking at those 2 gases right there tell me that its running rich....just lean out the system a tiny bit.
your co was higher than my 7 ever was, mine passed with 160xxx original miles, aftermarket filter but all emissions systems present, my readings were as follows (and running 87octane)
hc- 13ppm
co- .04 (%)
i dont remember what the co2 and the o2 were, but nox were around 110 and passing was ~700.
anyways, looks like your engine is running a bit rich, should have just dialed back the tps a tiny bit and you would have been fine. also, did you make sure to check the secondary air system? might have been an issue

what was your nox?

Lloyd

p.s can someone either delete this thread or rename it?

relax guys, there is no law that sais you HAVE to run gasoline in your car. it may be a cheat but the smog ***** can't do anything about it.

fixing the problem is probably the best idea though, since obviously wasting gas or running on failing cat isn't a great idea anyways.

oh right, because it is 100% on the people to know every single of the 10 million laws in this state and ignorance isn't an excuse. they can report me all they want, even if it will fail you how can any regular person know every thing they can and can't do? of course soon there will a law that if you fart in your tank before a test is performed then your car will never be allowed to be registered for street use and will be reposessed by the state and crushed/recycled..

you know what? **** california, i swear this will be the first state that has a civil revolution this century. i heard of a kid on the radio who was texting on his skateboard and went into an intersection against the light and was hit, you know in 2 years you won't be able to text and walk in california just because some d-bag puts it on the news and the lawmakers decide it's in our own interest to protect ourselves from ourselves(this crap happens every day but since it made news it's a huge issue, the kid's parents should pay for the repairs to the car because stupidity should be painful) by fining us(read as taxing us) for walking and breathing. i almost feel sorry for cops who have to write tikets for stupid *** stuff like that but the state has no regrets about forcing older cars off the road. the people who drive them usually have a reason for driving them and public transportation is lacking to the point they will never catch up to the 21st century standards, like the monorail in nor-cal to bay that was abandoned. the state wouldnt be broke as all hell if we didn't have half the state as state employees sitting on their thumbs watching youtube all day.

it won't because 99% of the population are sheep here and are stuck spending so much time to survive that all they can do is bitch about it.

you know the recession you're feeling even out there? you can be sure alot of it originated here.

(once again just saying what everyone is thinking since no one feels like saying it)

being 80HC over the limit in a few irregular cases isn't going to kill the environment.

I once argued with my architecture teacher about property. He believed that in the future no one would own open lawn, they would live in townhouse or apartment style structures. He didn't understand why anyone would choose to live so far from other people or choose to cut their own grass. I saw his point of view as a sickness and I still do. Many people have a sheep like mentality and it becomes evident in harsh times when they are expected to survive on their own. I don't think the recession originated in any one particular place but I do believe in democracy the collective will to change for the better. If enough people know about a problem or the exploitation of a loop hole you better believe something will be done sooner rather than later. My car will qualify for historic tags in two years. That means I have to go through emissions at least one more time. Don't ruin this for me

What is this smog test you speak of? Just J/king, people I know what it is. Oh and also here is NC(my area I know of) but if the car was made in 95 or older you dont deal with a smog test, only 96+ car deal with it which is so nice.

If the air pipe to your cat was broken when you failed the test, it is the reason you failed. You must have a cat and an air pump to pass.
