Catch can

Anyone have a catch can hooked up on their car? I've read conflicting posts about functionality which leads me to believe people have them hooked up very differently (i.e. wrong). Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 2 lines you want to run to the can are under the oil filler cap and under the oil filler neck (on a TII).

How would I properly install a catch can on the car? Anyone have pictures? Someone mentioned that nothing really collects or builds up in a rotary motor. I have one on my GVR4 and I have to empty it at each oil change (new motor, they just have a bunch of blow-by). My IC piping on that car is completely clean as a result

FYI, Emissions are gone on the FC...

You're making it far more complicated than it needs to be. All a catch can does is catch blowby and keep it from spraying all over the track or enginebay/tranny.

As for a rotary.. I've had my psuedo catchcan instaled for over two months, and I checked last weekend, and there is maybe 40ml in the bottle. Whats that equivalent to... a couple tablespoons maybe.

Its amazing how much little oil, when sprayed out those ports actually ends up everywhere. Anyhow, I just used an old oil bottle. Works fine for me.

EDIT: and I get to formaly tell the companies that sell catchcans to stick it.

Then again, my car would never be allowed on a track with this psuedo catch can on it :P

You have to do that when you remove emission ?

Could you just put a cap or something like that ?

I recently installed one, as well as the Racing Beat oil pan baffle plate. I was having problems at VIR, which is mostly right hand turns, with oil creeping up the filler tube and getting ingested by the PCV system, and getting all over the engine bay since the PCV can't keep up with the blowby when you're boosting hard for extended periods. The PCV insufficiency also causes problems with turbo bearing oil drainage because the "crankcase" gets pressurized when it can't keep up, which leads to poor turbo oiling and dead turbos.

haha, you dont think? Formula Mazdas use tupperware type bottles as catch cans for both oil and coolant. they race scca and nasa all over the place.

Capping the lines would do a couple things...

1) Pressure the sump (bad.)
--- weird things start to happen, like smoking intermittently for no reason

2) Corrosive gasses will no longer have an escape route from the lubrication system. So instead it gets absorbed into the oil, and tavels around the oil passages, eshaft, ect, pitting everything. After a few years of this, when you go to rebuild your engine... everything is pitted and out of spec due to the corrosive gasses.

Wow, that bottle is ghetto If you don't wanna spend the big $ on a real can (understandable, they are too expensive for what they are) you could use a plastic aftermarket coolant overflow bottle as one.

I'm being resourceful and keeping my mind on the budget. A catchcan is not worth $60 in my mind, in all seriousness, I give it about the value of a used oil bottle. Hence...

Other possibilities:
Used 1L (or 20oz) soda bottle
Extrta 1gal gas can laying around
plastic cup+seran wrap

see where im going here... Its just not something on the system that needs to have $60... or even $10 worth of attention.

Oil filter-neck breathers
You can. Keep in mind though the charcoal canister is stock prefilled with carbon media... I'd rather just use an empty container so I know whats really going into it...

So wait, by that logic, why not just combine everything (Catch Can, Charcoal Canister) into one?

In that case, lets just redirect the gas fumes from the gas tank and oil catch can (N20 mainly).
But wait... Thats the way it is stock! And I like to keep the manifold tracks + engine bay clean.

^^^ Radiator shrooud overlaps the bumper inlet. You have to jack the battery and tray out of the way to get a few extra inches of support.
EDIT: at second glance I perhaps see an intercooler on the engine side of the bumper support. Clever.

BIG... but clever

BTW: follow up on the catchcan, heres premium install picture
