Cat replacment

Well, today I was poking around the 7 and I decided to see what was up with the soft "tinklings" I was hearing when the car was idling. Got underneath and all the heat shields were tight, but when I started poking the main cat, guess what... lots of that "tinkling" sound. I am assuming this means my cat is shot. I also noticed that the pipe coming directly off the reactive exhaust chamber has some weird heat spots on it and rust to boot.

Anyways, I was just wondering what I should do about the cat. I thought maybe I could just get rid of the whole cat assembly in one swoop and get a test pipe welded up. Someone also suggested the Racing Beat cat replacment and presilencer. Do any of you have opinion on this or for that matter any opinions on this whole situation? I have been wanting to open up the exhaust a little bit for some more punch, but really had no reason to spend the money until now. Any thoughts, criticisms would be helpful.

Okay, that is a good suggestion. Upon seeing that it struck me that I do not have to worry about emissions here. Would it be better for performance to go without cats like the Racing Beat or similar or to use a cat replacment? Is there any power difference or is just neglible?

I was looking on RX7.com and I thought that the Bonez straight pipe with precilencer might be a better deal since I do not have to worry about emissions here. What worries me though is that it says in the description that there should be enough backpressure to operate the 6-port acuators. Does if what the description claims is true? Also, since this has no provision for a the air tube, does that mean I can just get rid of the smog pump all together?

I use the Bonez cat replacement pipe from RX7.com and it works great. From that on back I run an Apex N1 single sided. I'm running an 88 TII.

Did you remove your smog pump when you installed the pipe?

Actually I just took the belt off when I did it, but the pump is physically off now since I've done a rebuild and upgrade.

Uh yeah... I might consider that if I was willing to blow that much money. The reason I was looking at the Bonez is because it was a relatively inexpensive fix and would add a little more power.

Was removing the smog pump pretty easy to do? Did you need any extra materials to block off openings or anything? I kind of remember a thread back a while about removing them and what needs to be done... <Looks>

Well, just an update on this...
After much struggling, cursing, bare knuckles, help from my girlfriend, and WD-40 with rusted bolts I finally got my race pipe on. After letting it idle and bumping the throttle a few times to check for leaks, I took it for a test drive. I could tell the difference almost immediately. I suppose the most noticeable gain was in 1st gear to halfway through 2nd gear. It seems as if the power delivery is much more linear and quicker than before. Right now I have the hose from the air pump disconnected because I was not sure if I wanted to remove it just yet. Anyways, just thought I would let you guys know it all turned out well.

save yourself some money and gain some hp.

Step 1. Buy a mid pipe and replace all 3 cats.
step 2. Buy a cheap ebay cat.

Install the midpipe and have fun
if you still need emission have a muffler shop make toy a pipe with your new cat and drive it in and get the test done then go back to the midpipe. Problem solved.
its a win win situation for everyone.

Um, I did get a midpipe to replace all three cats. That is what the purpose of the last post was - to let people know that it turned out all right.
