Cat replacement

Just wondering if I replace my stock cat with the Bonez superflo cat converter, will it be street legal? Thanks for your input.

It would be 49 state legal, you can ask rotary performance if they have CARB approval stickers for the cat (for use in California)... I have one for sale in the classifieds section...

Look up on magnaflow's website for a cat that is CA legal. Otherwise I don't think there are many options in CA besides a O.E. replacement, you can try researching other companies, or like I said contact rotary performance and ask if they have CARB approval on the bonez cat...

Yes, the cat I have is pretty much almost brand new. Look in the classifieds...

Na have 2 pre cats that can fall apart and clog the exhaust. Turbos have just one precut. Almost all higher mileage cars have restricted cats so if I where u I would pull apart the exhaust and inspect the cats. The main (larger) cat can be checked by looking through it while facing a light source(sun). If u can see some light the cat is in good shape. If no light comes through then it's a restriction on the exhaust. What I have done with my na's is just gut the pre cats and leave the main cat on. The car will still pass ca smog Inc the visual. The pre cats help the car stay smog legal when at cold temp. All my smog test have been done when the car is up to normal operating temp. Try this first and maybe put the money into another upgrade.

Wow, guys, thanks for the great responses. Also, would it be possible to add a streetable header, like racing beat, is it CARB legal?

Prob burn the cat if you add that on. The stock header does restrict the exhaust but also helps to keep it quiet. Do you have a cat back exhuast yet? If you plan on DD this car just add a nice cat back exhaust. That will add nice power for the money. Also depending how the cops are in your area they may notice the header and give you a ticket esp because it will be loud with a header and will attract attention.

What are your plans for this car? Race or DD?

California will probably give you a ticket for modified exhaust. You pretty much can't do much out there. I am not 100% familiar with the laws, but do know having a modified exhaust is a no-no if it isn't CARB approved... Check with racing beat on that...

anything is legal until you get caught : )

I plan to use this as a DD. I currently have an HKS cat back, which is rusting, thinking about replacing it with a racing beat. Come on guys, how come I don't get a straight answer? I think I should call Racing Beat directly if I want answers.

I drive chill around cops, I don't think they hear the modifications if I drive slow. Okay, what is the best (CARB legal) cat replacement that I should get? Anyone?

The straight answer is I am willing to bet even that HKS cat back you have isn't technically legal in california (do you have a CARB sticker for that?). You asked us what is a "legal" cat-replacement you can have and as far as I know you will only be looking at something O.E.M type replacement. California has really strict laws when it comes to emissions and you can technically be "not legal" for anything you add to your car that is not CARB approved. Calling the manufacturer for a particular product you are interested in is the only way of knowing.

That said, if you know when you get your car inspected at the emissions station that the guy doing the inspection is lenient as long as you have your catalytic converter (even if aftermarket), then you won't have to worry about it. You can also end up with people that will not let things fly (see recent thread about "modified exhaust ticket") such as a cop that has nothing better to do but to check your exhaust for modifications...

Do a little research in your state's laws to find out what you can and can't get away with over there, California has the worse laws when it comes to cars enthusiasts...

Some thing to think of if you buy a cat from anyone on the board that isn't bolt up. You are going to have problems. It is against fedral law to put a "used" cat onto a car. $24k fine and you have to drive a prius while listening to Barry Manalow(sp?) for 5 years.

That being said, I have the Racing Beat turbo back with a bonez cat bolted in and it passes WA emissions just fine. Being that you live in the Peoples republic you may want to just fine a good emmisions guy to talk to first. then move.
