Exclamation Car starts, wont run.

I have had the car for a while now and never had any problems out of it. today when i went to start it, it willl fire up and run but only for about 3-4 seconds. and then dies. nothing changes if i feather the gas. the pump is on and runs, and i still have fire when it shouts down( i hooked a timmig light to it to see). its like the car will only run under accelerated warm-up. it starts and revs to 3000 rpm like it should then it just dies. its a smooth run and die. its all at once no sputtering or anything. any ideas?

ps. 87 na

thanks guys

AFM plugged in and functioning? That tends to be the main cause of such behavior. Hoses tight? Even if it was fine last time you drove it there is a chance something worked itself loose.

maf is plugged in. all hoses seem to be functioning as they should.

i have been outside in 20 degree weather working on it and noting has changed.

it starts and revs to like 2800ish and then shuts down like you turned off the key.

Let's say for example you revved the car up past 3k RPM's and held it, would it stay running?

nope, you cant rev it. if you hit the gas it just bogs it wont go past about 2800 actually.

Do like the Ford Tech's... Blame the CPU. LOL.

No really, I have no clue. Maybe TPS? Check all fuses. Check for vaccum leacks with propane.... running out of ideas.

I've had this problem before and it was related to fouled plugs--engine was flooding and fouling plugs. New plugs solved it. Flooding was caused by a combination of fresh rebuild and fouled plugs

My money is on the AFM, they can go bad. Find someone in your area that'll let you borrow theirs to test.

Well swap them out and see what happens!
Might also check the large vac lines that come off the intake.

im having the same problem with my FD. it started up great with new plugs then died in about 5 seconds. ill have to find a way to push it uphill, on ice... and into my garage to thaw it out.
this is the first time this has happened.. and this is the only time i have left it outside

i have that same problem but if you hit the throttle it will go for a little longer. new plugs fires a few times then there junk. it sputters backfires flames etc.. need new 02 sensor but it should at least run without that.. plus one of the studs on exhaust manifold is off so exhaust isnt on all the way. i just dont have or want to stick the money in if its going to need internal engine work. is there a specific way you compression test these engines?

Everyone here understands that there is an interlock in the AFM? And this interlock if not functioning it will not allow the fuel pump to continue to run?

So when you go to start, the fuel pump is running and when the key is returned to the "ON" position the AFM is what keeps the pump on.

Quick way to test this is to jumper the fuel pump test connector.
