Well this really wasent as easy as it seemed. Im tryint to take off my turbo on my 88TII and it seems, there is no way to get to the manifold bolts or the turbo to manifold bolts. I can see 3 from under the car but the top right bolt i cant see at all. And theres some form of retainig braket on the other bolts that doesent even allow me to loosen them so i have to figure out a way to get that **** out. Man guys this is a seriuos pain in the *** especially when its the first time and i have no clue what the hell is going on. Ive been folowing the hanes the whole time, and the main problems i have is that theres always bolts that are completly hidden and i cant remove them for ****. So can someone please tell me the proper procedure to gettting to these hiden bolts?????? Thanks. Out of the 12 steps im stuck on number 8

 

You basically have to trash the heat shields to get to the bolts. I find it easier to leave the turbo attached to the manifold and remove it as a unit.

 

ok cool does this expose the bolts underneath cuz i cannot see them at all like for example the top right bolt it seems to be totally obscured, what kind of tool do i use to get these bolts off

 

Top right on the manifold/housing or turbo/manifold?

 

the top right bolt you NEED an open end 14mm wrench. THe others you can get to using a normal socket and a wrench.

 

Ok, as far as the top right bolt on manifold housing there is NO WAY to fit a open ended wrench in there it seems the only way to get at that bolt is to take off the turbo first. Now of corse i can be completly wrong here but i jsut dont see any way to do this. Do i have to remove the lower radiator hose? Or what. There is jsut too much crap obscuring the bolt. It seems it would be easier to get to the manifold bolts if i removed the turbo first, but the top right bolt on the TURBO/MANIFOLD i cannot see at all

Just use a combo wrench on it. Thats all I did. Maybe first you should take off the heat shields and misc crap just to get it out of your way.

 

Thanks guys that worked, but theres a bolt i can barely get too and its totally rusted on. Its one of the down pipe bolts, its the biggest godamn pain in the *** ive ever had to deal with. Its so hard to get too it isisnt even funny, ive tried getting it off with tools, cutting it, banging it you name it. So far the only successful thing ive been able to do is cut it and that seems to be working very slowly. Im going to keep trying tomorrow.

 

Ok bolt cut now next problem, should i be removing the turbo up through the hood or down through the bottom, keep in mind this is the turbo and manifold together. The only way to remove it down is to remove the DP. As far as going up it seems kinda impossible cuz theres to many thigs obscuring the path. I already tore a radiator line trying to go up.

If you can unbold the turbo from the manifold, go up. Going up is easy, I can get the turbo out in 30 minutes, plus the time to drain the fluid.

 

just unbolt your dp from the turbo, and let that baby rest down. You may need to unbolt it from the cat-back to make it easier. You're gonna want to take it out from under if you have the whole thing together. That'd be a huge hassle going up through the bay. But keep in mind, that's gonna be one heavy sucker, and you're on your back pulling it down, so be VERY careful.
And if you're having trouble with bolts, try using some good penetrant (sp?). Anti rust stuff. Great key for taking off bolts that haven't budged since assembly.

Exactly why it should come up through the engine bay.

 

OK im having a lot of trouble. Basically when i try to go down its hitting the right side of the chasis, TonyTurboII If you have the Turbo and mani together wouldent you go down? Theres like no room going up. So how in the hell do you guys get it through that opening??? the exuast manifold seems to be what is causing the turbo to hit the right side it just doesent seem to fit through! Ill go try again. Yeah, I dont think its coming out either way without the manifold off.

 

lol man i would love to see you guys do this in 30 minutes, so far its taken me 4 days to get this out and i still havent gotten there! yeah so im a moron. Ok so ill try to take off the turbo from the mani.

Well, the thing is, Tony is right. I can take mine off and on in probably the same time. It's because the first time is THE worst. You have all that crap in the way. Heat sheilds are the devil. Once they're gone, it's nice and open, and you have good access to everything. Usually, we all take off the turbo first and then the manifold, but everyone told you and seemed to convince you to do it one piece. Either way, it's going to be a bitch. All I can personally suggest is that if you're gonna keep it one piece, keep wiggling and moving around to see if you can slip her through.. You MAY need to break it down and take them out seperately.

Tony, if you're coming up through the bay, there's alot more stuff to navigate through if he's keeping it one piece. I agree, turbo and mani seperate, up through the bay, that's what I do. then again, lifting that heavy bitch up through the bay could hurt your back at the same time. either way, it's damn heavy as one big piece.
