Can I get yout take on the rust on this GTU? Compression numbers also.
You're welcome. I have some rust I need to fix around the rear wheel wells. I really want to learn to TIG first but just haven't had the time to learn.
It is pretty rewarding to have success on a large project like that but fixing my tiller felt pretty good. Especially since I didn't have to take it to someone else I was able to do the repair and still get done what I needed to that day. Being able to weld does open some doors on what kind of projects one can do. I'm no expert but when you find a welder you can send the details to me and I'll give my input on it.
Unfortunately I don't know of any coupes for sale. If they still have it I know where a S4 convertible was for sale a few mile from me. I also know where a S5 GTU is. Unfortunately though all S5 cars are 5 lug I think the GTU had single piston front brakes unlike the S4 GTU that had 4 piston calipers. Also I don't know if it is a manual either. Not sure if it has a sunroof I'll look next time I drive by, but when I inquired about it 6 or 7 years ago they wouldn't sell it. It has a bad motor and at this point has probably been sitting 15 years. I haven't seen it up close but from a couple 100 feet the body looks good. I didn't talk to the owner directly as it is in the lot of junk cars behind an auto dealership, but the story I got from the service manager is it belonged to a lady's son who died and she won't sell it. Wants to fix it someday IIRC. I can inquire about it again if you'd like. I'm afraid it's going to sit there until she passes away and then end up at the crusher.

I'd love for you to enquire about it, whenever that's convenient for you. Thank you so much for offering that. That's a sad story if true, but the car does sound interesting and I'd love to get it if it works out that way, especially with you birddogging it. Whenever you connect with them, I don't know if it helps but my son is a big part of the reason we working on this project. It'll be my car for a while but his down the road (not to be a drift machine, mind you). I'd be happy to keep her in the loop on the build if she's interested, so that she can know that a young man with the same interests as her son had is enjoying the car in a similar way. It'll be our car but I'd love to honor his memory in some way, if she's like that.
My son and I both love these cars and want to fix one up to be a clean and nice cruiser for having fun with (and fun to work on together). I'll be keeping this car for decades, especially after all the love and work we'll have put into it, ha ha.
Yeah, I pass on a good number of cars that I know I'd be able to tackle once I'm through the welding learning curve.

Stopped by that dealership. May not have talked to the right people as the service manager nor the parts guy that was hanging out at the service desk had any clue. They put me in touch with the tow truck driver who doesn't know who owns it but doesn't think anything has changed. He did give me the name of someone who he thinks the owner is related to, but I haven't had the chance to follow that lead yet.

Really clean car. I'm disassembling the keg this weekend and then figuring out the rebuild strategy. We're pumped.
If you ever get connected with the owner, I am still interested actually. No rush on it though. Thank you again for birddogging for us!
