Buzzing from shift lever in 4th between 3k and 3.5k

Has anyone else noticed this, or have any ideas on the cause or ways to correct it? It's annoying.

When I'm accelerating and working my way up through the gears (86 NA GXL) and I start passing through 3k in 4th, the shift lever starts buzzing. When I pass 3.4-3.5k the buzzing stops. There are no other funky symptoms that I can detect. Nothing weird sounding from the drivetrain and nothing through the pedals. It also sounds like something is buzzing within the transmission (presumably something attached to the shift lever - duh.)

The buzzing is not unusually loud. And it's always been like this. The car got a belly full of Redline MT-90 last week, so the buzzing's probably not from poor lubrication or toasted fluid.

Should I take the buzzing as a warning of problems to come, or just ignore it as 'one of those things,' like wind noise and the ashtray popping open over bumpy roads...

Some times my shift lever makes a buzzing sound. I think mine is the emblem on the **** showing the shift pattern is comming loose. Been meaning to pry it off and reglue it but I am afraid of breaking something.

Might not be the same noise as yours though.

Definitely not. The entire lever is vibrating. And it *always* happens in the described circumstances.

I should have added - when I'm holding a steady speed between 3k-3.5k in 4th, the vibrating/noise isn't there. It's *only* when I'm accelerating through that range in 4th.

Has anyone else also noticed that if your 7 is sitting idling, there's a little rattling and shaking from the transmission, but as soon as the clutch is depressed it disappears?

If you have a short shifter on your car that could be considered somewhat normal. Some do it, some dont. Not sure if the stock setup is supposed to buzz.

As far as the rattling sound in your tranny, does it make like a " whoosh whoosh whoosh" sound and then go away once you press the clutch? If so sounds like a throw out bearing.

If you read about the short throw shifters on some site(can't remember wich one) they did a study on this. They found that it depends on the car, they said that 1 out of every 3 cars has this shifter problem. They said that if you take the same shifter out and put it in another 7 of the same year, same model, same everything that chances are, it won't happen. Just depends on the car. Mine does it, I just got used to it or just turn my system up so I can't hear it!

I agree with most of the replies. It is somewhat common (more so on the series 4 shifters) when the inner insulator has separated from the outer shell of the shifter.

Check the engine and tranny mounts - an engine mount starting to seperate [usually the passenger side] can cause this type of vibration through the whole drive train.

Mazdatrix.com is the site that explains the shifters. I think.

I'll check it out. My diff is going to be replaced before next weekend and I'll ask the guy to follow up your suggestions. Thanx.

Oh, my shifter is stock. New shift lever bushings were thrown in a few months ago...
