whats the plastic lens above my turn signals???

I've got an '89 GTU and was wondering what that clear plastic lens above my turn signals in front is for?? I just got the car, but I've been messing around with the lights, trying to see if they were lights or what, but they never light up. Was this spot an option for fog lights or something? If its non-functional, I was thinking about gutting it and making a ram air/cold air tunnel to the intake.
Thanks
Jake

They are called passing lenses. While your lights are down, flick your high beams and it shines through there. If you want those lights to be on all the time while you drive, although not legal, you must remove the 30A retractor fuse from the fuse box located near the driver side headlight. I have been running without pop-ups and nothing from cops so far.

Maybe you're referring to the flash to pash lens? These are used (if you want to be shot by the ahole you're tailgating) to indicate that you want to pass. You can activate your highbeams momentarily without flipping up the headlights, and the light will shine through the clear lenses.

hmmm, ok thanks for the replies. I'll have to check out the car and see if there would be room to make a tunnel for my intake. I don't think I really need that flash-to-pass feature

In Japan, those lenses actually have lights inside them so you could have the lights up and have the FTP lenses lit up as well. I have mine hollowed out. It looks pretty tough!!

There are people who have done it (made an intake out of an FTP.)

Or you could do 'sleepy lights.'

http://rx-7.freehosting.net/lights.htm

I've done this mod. I used to have my lights 'sleepy' style. Now I just leave them down all the time, and use the switch to pop them if I'm driving away from city lights or in the rain (you can't see a damn thing with the lights down) or am concerned that other traffic can't see me.

I've been driving with them down for about 3 months without so much as a sniff from the cops...

If you plan on running with the lights down, you need to have some sort of secondary lighting...they're not very bright shining through there.
