Boost Creep, I know, I know...

Okay. So I have an 87 T2. My mods are walbro fuel pump, 720cc secondary injectors, k&n cone filter, racing beat fcd, racing beat 3" downpipe, straight 3" exhaust no cats. Also a better boost gauge. Now, I haven't ported the wastegate yet, but I will next week. Will I have to worry about boost creep badly, or should I be okay for a few days. I don't plan on racing or any **** like that, but I will be making a 250 mile trip on monday. Will my car be fine for the trip? Also, how much boost should I be looking to run about. Hopefully next week I can pick up a boost controller also. Thanks,
-Eric

Be safe. Baby it. Oh and a boost controller merely increases boost. But yeah, if you baby it and try not to go into boost you will be fine.

With a boost controller, could I set the boost to just run a lower, safer amount. I was looking at a manual one.

yeah you set it for what ever boost you want to run.........but that doesint stop boost creep it will still creep up cazing your boost to rise .........so a the boost controller is not going to help this problem but you will be able to set your boost wooooot........

Just wondering, when I port the wastegate, how big should I make, I was reading 1 mm less than the flapper, but then they said that wouldn't be enough. I also saw that some people used a metal washer and welded it to the flapper. I only want to run like 10-12 psi at most for the time being.

Edit: I've been reading through this thread https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ting+wastegate

This sounds like a lot easier thing to do. Now tack welding the flaper shut will be fine? Would I be able to just remove the stock mani and just drop the new one in, or would I need any modifications?

How big did you port the wastegate? Any specific washer or just a regular 20 cent one from like home depot. Did you use the stock flapper or find a better one?
Thanks,

tack welding the flaper shut will befine long as you have a exturnal wategate
you can get a weld together header from racing beat its like $89 bucks than you have to make a flang for your turbo to bolt to it......and how you will have a tubler turbo manifold with exturnal waste gate...........if you dont feel so good about tack welding the flap shut than just leave the every thing on the stock turbo and dont hook up the boost singal to it

sounds a lot more complicated than just porting the wastegate, an external wastegate is really only necessary on some bigger turbos imho.

not really if he was to make it than it would probley take him a few hrs....and it would flow so much better its a very good upgrade...if he bought 1 than its jsut a matter of unbolt and bolt a new 1 on and ready to go its

i ported the wastegate the size of where the flapper shut's on. just enough for the flapper to still seat. i just used a washer that barely fit in there..... had to grind the corner of the wall away so it could open all the way.

Do you think I would be fine for now if I just ported it to the size of the flapper and didn't use a washer?

If you know how to port correctly (flare the port out just right) you won't have any boost creep and should be able to keep the boost down to about 8 psi.
