Which boost controller?

I'm hooking up a racing beat exhuast to a S5 TII. This car is completely stock. I ordered a turbo timer and FCD. Now I need to get a boost controller. I was curious as to if a manual boost controller will do or would I be better off getting a fancy pants one. I want to squeeze out 250 rwhp on the stock turbo (12 psi?) and if I can get this reliably off a manual boost controller thats the route I will probably go.

Also there is the issue of more fuel. Will 720cc secondaries be enough or will I need a SAFC?

well your biggest problem may be too much boost, not too little. the s5 wastegate is better than the s4 but it will still creep

I had a greddy profec-b (the old one, not the spec-II) and it was AWESOME. it was as easier to set than a manual boost controller and held boost perfectly.
basicly you have a gain **** and a high and low boost ****.
The gain sets the speed at wich the contoller works the actuator, and what you're aiming to do is to get it to hold off opening the actuator until the last possible second before boost rises and hits the inteded pressure. set it too high and you'll get bad spiking, turn it down a little and you get a quick reacting actuator that won't even crack open until .1 or .2bar before the set pressure.
the high and low boost ***** are just that. i never really set my high boost, all it needed was the low boost setting on the setup i was running. if you turn the unit off, boost defaults to the stock wastegate actuator setting.
You can pick them up used for a fair price on ebay most of the time. I'd reccomend it in a heartbeat and regret selling my last one. but the TII will def have one on it when the time is right.

what do you have to give you more fuel for running 12psi?

get an electric one .. alot easier and you dont have to fidlly around in the engine bay.

i have an e-01 and love it

Bronze .. what did you have your gain set at? I have tried to adjust mine forever .. and I keep overboosting, or not boosting quick enough. Currently at ~38 but I don't know if thats right

there were not any numerical values on the control *****, the gain was on a scale of slow to sharp. i had it set pretty high though, and it would spike once little bit, but it would settle down quickly. if it was set too high on the profec, it would spike, settle, spike, settle very quickly.

I'm not sure what to tell you to do with the e-01 as it probably handles the boost control differently. the profec-b is a very simple unit. the gain affects boost pressure, but then you even that out with the boost control ****. you have to set the gain first. you have to have a boost gauge to use it, because the readings on the boost dial are low to high. so you set the **** at the lowest setting, do a pull and turn it up until it hits the boost you want. again, if you overboost or get a bunch of spikes you have to dial down the gain and start again setting the boost. it's really not that hard, and i think it beats messing with these new "fuzzy logic" boost controlers.

The AVC-R and the Profec A are not that great on our cars. Just get a Profec-B.

ihave a mbc on a hybrid s5 turbo. i ported the wg, not a lot though, mainley the smaller hole. I hit .6 bar prety consistent without a boost controller. I put the mbc on and raised the boost to .8bar. After a while the boost starts dropping back down to .6bar.

The manual boost controller gave me better response, but doesnt keep full boost like a ebc would

an electronic boost controller should also hold the wastegate shut almost until full boost is reached. example, say your stock wastegate is set at 1bar, it might start to crack open as early as .5 bar. with an electronic boost controller it should be able to hold the wastegate shut until .8 or .9bar, letting your turbo spool up freely by not having any exhaust gas escaping through the wastegate prematurely.
a manual boost controller can't do that.

I have a AEM Tru Boost in my 88 turbo. Very easy to setup and make adjustments and pretty cheap got mine for $180 like new and fits right into a gauge pod.

Don't buy a boost controller until the exhaust and FCD are installed and you know how much boost you get as a result. As mentioned above, your problem may be too much boost rather than not enough, and no boost controller can lower boost.

Don't waste your money on a turbo timer, you don't need one.

good pt. dont worry untill you need more boost. Turbo timer isnt really needed untill you hit lots of boost on a drive, Stock turbo is water n oil cooled is plenty for a normal driver. For teack events everyone usually cools down their cars anyways
