Time to buy a beater car and do your first rebuild. It'll be fun! Then you can port it, and that's the best self made mod there is for NA rotaries. Look on the bright side, you didn't have an engine fire.

Rotaries blow. Yep, that's the nature of them. The good part is that they are very fast and easy to repair when this happens, no reboring or valve lapping required.

Is balancing important for the home rebuild?

I've never messed with trying to balance the stock components better than they were by the factory. But always use rotor weights no more than one letter apart, and use the appropriate counterweight for the series of engine (ie. don't mix/match s4 c/w with s/5 engine or turbo with nonturbo).

the letter can be seen on the rotor side and is a weight marker used by the factory to assemble similarly weighted rotors together (there is always variance in weight of cast / milled components).

couple Q's tho if i've got the 87-88 master kit i'm going to need to get diff front cover gasket and intake gasket but all the internals can be changed over right.. can't remember... some one reminds me...

You don't need to use the front cover gasket, in fact it has been proven in race applications that using no front cover gasket with just the oil feed O ring and some silicone sealant between it and the front iron will produce less of a chance of blowing said O ring when oil pressure gets high.

As far as intake gaskets, I'm currently using no gasket (other than rtv) on the lim to block joint, old (clean separation on one side) gaskets + rtv on all the other intake manifold joints, and have no vacuum leaks that I know of, runs great.
