Wheelhop question.....
OK, so I get crazy wheelhop in my car all the time. I absolutely cant do a burnout, the wheels dont spin they just bounce. Even on a hard shift to 2nd sometimes, gets wheelhop very bad. If I try to do a burnout, rev to 6k, dump clutch, justy *BOOM*BOOM *BOOM *BOOM*, extremely violently. I let of as soon as possible, as to not break anything. I've replaced my rear struts, but the springs are stock. Ive looked it over and it appears that my Diff mount is OK, not broken. I realize that the car is old and stuff is worn out, but I really dont think it should be this bad. IS there anything else that can contribute to this that I may have overlooked?? Thanks
You need better rear shocks. Do it soon or the diff mount will be broken... take it easy when taking off and that will help stop alot if it. Wheel hop is not good for your car.

Yea, I know its not good and the diff mount can be broken fairly easily. The shocks are KYB gas-adjust. I want to upgrade to Tokicos, but wanted to fix my wheelhop problem 1st. My car is off the road for the winter now, so I have a few months to fix whatever it is. So you think that my shocks are the only problem?? Would the springs have anything to do with it also??

and body roll, ride harshness, contact control for the wheel on varying road surfaces.........
it could be your bushings allowing to much flex and the suspension getting out of alignment. tighter springs can just be a bandaid for it and you are also going to be getting everything else that comes with it.

An other reason for wheel hop is the shocks don't give enough damping. That's why a lot of lowerd cars will hop, people just replace the springs and not the stock shocks.
The springs do a LOT more than control the ride higth. I agree that you should check the bushings. My car will hop if I launch at with out enough RPM, but at 6k it just smokes 'em up. Will your car spin the wheels in the rain? Or hop then also?
I noticed that most NA's that I have been in will hop like crazy, but fd's and t2's will just smoothly spin their wheels, anyone know why? torque? I can't think of a reason that more torque would prevent hopping.

I have got 310,000 miles on my stock springs and I have almost no wheel hop.
maybe your shocks are already shot?
Push down on the area over the shocks with your body and see if its easy to push down and does it bounce, or just return to normal height.

If I push down it just goes back to normal height, no bounce.
Kinda off topic, but if anyone has a pic or diagram of the differential mount, and where it gets broken, that would really help me out, because Im not even real sure what Im looking for.

that was happening to me about a year ago, it turned out to be worn rear shocks and appearently it caused a leak in the rear axle on the right hand side. you could see then entire thing was coated.
the only bad thing is it's starting to happen again. i'm getting wheelhop in dry conditions only though. i guess they are starting to wear out already. considering i was using midas brand, it is true, you get what you pay for

GLHS probably doesn't get any wheel hop because of his very weak suspension. When he launches the car it probably sits down on the stops. Your problem could be that it's too stiff in the springs or not enough damping force. Try a rear strut tower brace and perhaps all urethane bushings in the rear. Get rid of the passive rear stear and if that still doesn't fix it then play with your tire pressures. If that still doesn't work then get some adjustable shocks and fiddle with the settings. You'll probably want to make it less stiff.
Oh yeah, it could also be causes by the motor/tranny moving around. Get the mazda comp motor and tranny mounts too.

No wheel hop was a bad choice of words.
Some people are sooo mature about things...
I contribute my lack of wheel hop to my custom setup, which is solid and doesn't move much..
You will never get rid of wheel hop in a independant rear end.....

a broken differential mount isn't what would cause wheel hop that i know of. get under there and look at the lower arm bushings, etc and see how cracked and deformed they are. it can also depend on your tires. i had a particular tire on a car before that would cause wheel hop easily. as mark said, there is a point in between traction and spinning where they can jump. partly because everything is somewhat worn out. getting aftermarket springs will help some, provided your dampers are upgraded with them.
