Yup, random. My 86 base has one, and my friends 86 GXL doesn't. I just tell him God was getting even for him having the LSD.

Dissin' the GXL? You horrible, heartless person!

Kidding...

My S4 GXL had the steel hood, sadly...

The S4 base isn't a P.O.S. It's uber light...So it probably out-runs my GXL by a bit even with my pathetic aluminum flywheel. So it's actually pretty good, even if it is 4-Lug.

Edit: Alright, I'll confess. I enjoy power windows, adjustable suspension and power steering.

I didn't say the S4 Base was a POS. I said MY S4 base was a POS. And it was a major POS.

A.A.S. doesn't suck if the suspension is in good condition. 'nuff said..

Nobody NEEDS AAS. The button should be glued into the "sport" position. If you need cushy suspension, buy a crown vic.

A.A.S. doesn't make the suspension 'cushy' in the Normal setting. But it does NOTICEABLY soften the blow of bumps and imperfections in the road surface around town... yet it will firm things up if need be, without you touching a thing.

On the highway or anywhere else that isn't a bit bumpy, keep it in Sport.

True, but even better is just locking the suspension in super firm. Makes things a bit bumpier.

Just in case you didn't know, the AAS had 3 settings, only 2 were user selectable. and upon hard acceleration or braking, it activated the next firmest setting. At least thats what it claims in the user manual.

Very true. Soft, Firm and Very Firm. 'Normal' was kept in the Soft setting until Firm was required to reduce roll, squat or dive. Or if you exceeded 78mph.. 'Sport' was kept in Firm, and then put into Very Firm under the same circumstances.

Would be cool if you could adjust the timing of each... Do they make aftermarket struts that are AAS compatible? They should.. its a cool idea... if only the advanced driver could have more in-cockpit control.

A lot of high-end cars have 'A.A.S.' these days. Ferrari has a very elaborate user-selectable system.

all of this info on the AAS is truly fascinating... but to the thread starter, if you want to find out if your hood is aluminum or not, do the magnet test: get a good magnet, notice how it sticks to the fender, then try the hood. Same = steel, not sticking? You've got aluminum!
