Blown Apex Seal???

****... this sucks bigtime. Let me tell you:

This morning, I drove my S5 RX-7 w/ 198,000 KMS original on it to work. Everything was cool...

Then when I start it up to go home, it had an EXTRA hard time starting. Harder than normal. The idle was EXTRA rough, too. I thought it would go away after the engine was warm... but noooo, the engine just shut down once I let off the gas - it would idle out. And even when it was warm, it would just shut down as soon as I let off the gas. And the engine idle was super rough, even after the engine was warm and the revs were over 5,000 RPM.

So what do you guys think? Blown Apex Seal? This blows.

Could be a Major Vac leak or MAF sensor stoped working.. Get a compression check too see if yuo did blow a Apex Seal.

Nobody here is qualified to diagnose a blown apex seal from over the internet. A compresion test is your only bet to accurately diagnose your problem.

Thanks trainwreck517... but would something like that happen all of a sudden? I know that Apex seals do that...

Ohhh... also, the muffler was extra loud and I could kinda feel exhaust heat coming from the side.

I think if the Mass Air Flow meter isn't working.. it is adjusted to run exreamly rich.. That could cause your unburnt fuel to get spit out and cause your exhuast to get hot.. Or a seal blew and fuel is being spit out also.

Just get a compression check.

I had my engine go out on me this summer, after talking to lots of folks and not figuring anything out...Keith at Rotary Resurrection said to just pull one bottom plug at a time...crank the engine and feel/listen for 3 simular sounds....any lack of pressure or uneven sounds and you have a bad engine.

Wow, Keith is smart!

Anyway, I'm pretty sure it's the Apex Seal now... I watched my engine idling... it would go smooth for a second, then shake like crazy, go smooth for a second, shake like crazy. If that's not a bad Apex Seal, then I don't know what is.

dude just get a compression test done. It takes all of five minutes. When my (2)Apex seal went the car couldnt idle at all, would be rough as hell below 1700k and above 2800k. No power, nothing.

First off, it's Kevin, not Keith. Good to be remembered in one form or another, I guess, though.

Second, you don't need a gauge to tell if your engine is blown or not. ALl you need is a sparkplug socket and your ears. You can do as described above, or take both the lowers out at once and listen for 6 uninterrupted whooshes. The best way is to get a friend to crank the engine for you, while you keep your hand right by both lower plugholes, and FEEL the air coming out of each hole representing each seal.

IT takes about 3 minutes, so just do it and stop wondering.

Some characteristics of blown apex motors are uneven, galloping starts (duuuh-duuuuh-duuuuh), starts up like a lawnmower, refusal to idle, slow to rev, excessive backfiring and total lack of power to pull out from a stop or accelerate.

YUP... did the compression test today. Rotor 1 - 105 psi, Rotor 2 - 45 psi. Busted Apex Seal is a guarantee. Sucks.

And Kevin... it's true, I had galloping starts, lawnmower, slow to rev, and insane amounts of backfiring.

This sucks. Anyway... parting it out! Or will sell whole thing for $2,000 CAD.

Actually, I work at the bank. Today, it took about $1.30 CAD to buy $1 USD. That means $2000 CAD is basically $1538.46 USD. Thanks George W.!!!

In any case, in the 1970's, the CAD was $1.50 to $1 USD. Then Trudeau ruined it!!!

Dude, I was just kidding. Why are you all so uptight anyone mentions anything about canada? you all seem to suffer from insecurity issues as a whole, at least from what I read of your responses on the internet.

BTW, what the f(*& did you do to the wheels on that FC?

RotaryResurrection... are you the same guy that had posted previously before this last post? You sound like a totally different person from the one who gave me the advice...

We're not uptight about Canada... maybe some people are just tired of hearing all the jokes about the Canadian Dollar. Just like you Americans must be tired of hearing the infinite amount of jokes people make about your country!!!

As for my wheels... those are Werks rims.

I apoligize if you think I was uptight, when I wrote that I had no intentions of being rude or whatever. I'm sure if I added a simple smiley after the first line you probably wouldn't have thought that.

funny how feelings are always misread when you can only read what they say...

oh and ps. In my experience, I found that Canada is one of the only countries that makes fun of itself so much! You should see the t-shirts I buy!
