Might as well get a new one. It's only 60 bucks (up here in Canada, which means cheaper for you ), and that way you have a brand new pump without having to worry about a seal going out or anything.

Err excuse me. I meant water pump, not the water pump housing where it bolts to.

My mistake.

I have a water pump housing assembly though that I may be willing to part with. The copperish stuff you are referring to, do you mean the staining of the dried up coolant? The one I have has that too, although it's mostly white. The housing I have is in good shape..

While that isnt good, its fairly common, and as long as its not a built up sludge, its not bad. It wont really affect anything if its just a discoloration/staining. If youre really that worried about it, you can bead blast the housing. But I am very sure that did NOT cause teh overheating.

How do the inside surfaces of the pump housing look. That leak seal seal stuff is normally harmless to the pump area, but it could be hiding a small leak elsewhere, like in the radiator. I'd just be on the lookout for a radiator or heater core leak when you get the rebuild running.

I had a pump housing leak on an 87 about 4 years ago. It showed a coolant stain on the outside of the back of the casting. Bondo marine epoxy putty stick fixed it.
