Bad compression

Hi everyone, I'm new here..

I'm considering buying an rx-7 as my first car (heh.. I want one bad ) The guy selling it said that the car runs but has bad compression on the second lobe/rotor .. I'm curious if this is fixable + how much it will cost to do.. Also could you tell me what I would need to buy and how to do it.. It's an '86 NA..

Thanks alot for any help

Engine rebuild. Figure 1-2 thousand dollars.

Unless you find a junkyard engine that runs good. My brother bought an 86-88 NA engine for 300 bucks that appears to be a rebuild.

A rebuild is the only way to get the compression back up....but how does the car run? Steady idle? Good power? It may still have some life left in it.

A rebuild, junkyard engine, or a used engine (not from a junkyard) are basically your options. Rebuilds start at $1000. Ive seen some junkyards that sell their engines for $150-300 dollars. Used engines that people sell online/offline run for about $500 I think. Good luck with the car if you decide to buy it.

Not sure how it runs.. I'm buying it from an auction (I know.. bad idea..) The guy is in MD.. I'm in PA.. So I can't test drive it..
He said he only drove it to move it across a lot..

Don't know how comfortable I would feel driving it home 200 miles..

Can you put a newer engine in it.. Like a '91?

That really doesn't sound good. These cars will run for a while even after an apex seal is blown....they won't run good (i.e. terrible idle and no power). It sounds like this guy might be trying to unload the car. Figure 2g's to put a new motor in (yes you can put in a newer engine, but search the forums on how to do that) and then try to start talking the guy down. Without you being able to see the compression numbers and here how the car runs in person then I wouldn't recommend this car unless you get it for dirt cheap.

Shipping isn't that bad. You can get one from Malloy MAzda , MAZDA REMAN for around 1900. They are in Northern VA?. Pineapple Racing does HIGH quality rebuilds with an excellant warrenty. For a "quickie" [less money/less good stuff] try Hyptynz7 {Kevin Landers}.

Shipping for my last motor SC to OR and OR to SC was 306 total.

But remeber, in the end you get what you paid for.
