the hold button is on the gear shift lever. However due to the lack of power i took it out and dropped a 5speed in. Im not sure what codes you are talking about.

lol. on the automatic, there is a HOLD light in the tachometer that will come on when something isn't right. it works like a CEL for the transmission. it will flash showing codes just as if you were checking the engine codes. i just can't find the code list anywhere.

this car is for a friend/customer. he's an older gentleman and doesn't feel like shifting through the gears of a manual transmission lol.

my first thought of why the transmission was shifting late (out of first gear over 4200 rpm's was due to a bad transmission filter, but after replacing that and adding new fluids the problem still exists). to get it to shift you need to take your foot off the accelerator and let it shift.

i tried convincing him to let me do a manual swap (i have a manual trans, pedal assembly, master cylinder and slave cylinder) but he is content with it being an automatic. funny thing is,he says the automatic vert is faster than his 91 corvette!

i just need a link to the HOLD codes list

My car was an auto. I never saw a hold light near the tachometer. You must have an S5 fc. The s4 didnt have any warning lights exept what was on the center warning light stick

yea sorry guys the car is an 89 s5. i guess i assumed all automatics had the HOLD light. thanks for posting the link into the fsm, the link i have for the fsm requires you to download it in order to view it and im on my gf's pc and she doesn't want me to download anything. it's her first brand new pc and she is worried about viruses and such....even though we have protection lol. anyhow, im going to give the fsm a read through and see if i can find it. thanks again Satch.

i'll let you guys know tonight or tomorrow how useful the fsm is

when the hold light comes on, it just keeps flashing

ok sorry it's been so long. the battery had died on the car and apparently so is my charger so i finally got the battery charged. dropped it in, fired it up. listen to her smooth idle. gave it a few mins to up up. wen't for a spin and the moment it shifted late out of first the hold light came on flashing. not a code, just keeps flashing. i checked the fsm and don't see anything for a continuously flashing hold light. it never stops or restarts like a code should. it just keeps flashing. any ideas at all what could be wrong? and by the, the automatic transmission ecu has been replaced before by a new unit because some shop had told the owner that was why the hold light was on im going to keep searching but any advice would be appreciated. thanks guys

i have a question...do i need to ground out the single plug near the battery as if i were testing check engine light codes? i just read this somewhere for the fd, but is it the same for the fc?

YeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaY! ok so i figured it out. i grounded off the blue connector and read the hold codes as they flashed. thankfully only one code is being thrown, number 55 which is the transmission pulse generator for the speed cable. unfortunately, i have been searching the internet and cannt find one anywhere other then one site that shows a pic of it but states that it's currently unavailable. anyone know where i can get one? im going to try calling my local part stores in the morning but i doubt any of them will carry it. thanks for the input guys!

does the speedometer work? the FC's have a cable speedo, and the electronic speed signal is actually generated in the speedometer itself.

so you need to go to step 2 and find out where the transmission gets its speed signal from. if the transmission gets its signal from the speedo, like cruise control, if cruise control works...

the speedometer works, kinda. i was driving last night. first gear rev'ed up to 4200 before it shifted into second and mean while the speedometer was reading 20mph. i leaned a little more onto the throttle and the speedometer finally came up to speed at 40mph and the HOLD light began flashing. it still felt like i was going faster then 40mph but i don't know.

so it works as soon as you take off but isn't accurate. then as you speed increases somewhere between 35-40mph the speedo jumps up from 20mph and the HOLD light begins flashing. sounds like the pulse generator sensor to me, only because if it was the speedometer cable it would continue to not work.

is there an electronic sensor on the back of the speedometer? i know that manual cars don't have a sensor there but this is the first automatic fc i've ever worked on.

the manual cars do have a sensor there. that is where the cruise control gets its signal

really? i never noticed a sensor, just the sport for the speed cable to plug into, but not electronic? all i've owned have been gxl cars which came equipped with cruise control. hmm, maybe it isn't what im imagining.

so i called all my local part stores and no one has a listing at all, so i called mazda and a new one costs $187.45. then i had an idea, can i ohm it out to check to see which sensor is bad? if so, anyone know what the ohms should be?

can you replace the sensor on the back of the speedometer without replacing the whole speedometer? i have a couple spares, also is the one for an s4 the same as an s5?

im going to continue searching. thanks guys

a friend of mine recommended that i try replacing the speedometer first, which i have a spare cluster so not a problem. im going to try swapping out the speedometer and see if the problem continues. i'll let you guys know how it goes.
