Automatic tranny feels like its in neutral...
My sister has a series5 N/A with an automatic tranny. I think the car is about to get to the 100,000 mile mark. She told me that smoke came out of the bottom of the car and the car was having a hard time moving. I drove it and everything worked perfect. Then my dad took it to work and the car left him stranded. When the tranny is in any gear other than neutral, the car barely moves and the RPMS are high. You have to give it alot of gas for it to start moving. The car barely made it up our driveway and the engine was near redline.
The HOLD light is flashing giving me some kind of error code. Does anyone know that this means? The tranny has plenty of fluid in it.

that sounds like what my trans was doing, i just swapped in a 5spd. but anyways, when i pulled the auto trans out we couldnt turn the input shaft no matter how hard we tried. i guess it either siezed up or all the clutch bands let loose, it is going to need a rebuild.
you can look in the FSM in the auto tranny section and it will tell you the error codes based on the flashing hold light.

When auto trannies wear out, that's what they do..SLIP. Just like a slipping clutch on a manual car.
Could be low or out of fluid, but even if you replace it, the trans has already been hot/starved of fluid and most likely won't be okay.

We replaced the fluid and filter but the problem is still there. Were debating on getting the tranny rebuilt or doing a 5spd conversion.

it will probibly be cheaper to do a 5spd swap and less likely for something to go wrong in the future. the hardest part is getting the adapter brackets and getting the counterweight off. let me know if you need any advice that would help you with the swap.
