automatic seatbelts

do mazda fix Seatbelts free of charge if they are broken as per required by Transportation department?

my passnger seatbelt works on and off, and I had known couple guys who had theirs changed to manual ones by Mazda dealers free of charge, tho not sure if it's still possible.

anyone who had done them recently?

Sorry, don't believe it.
No dealer in his right mind would assume the legal risk of "changing" seatbelts from auto to manual.

^^I agree with this.

But there is a recall on all the automatic seatbelts IIRC. Go to the dealership and give em your VIN and see what they say.

Automatic Shoulder Belt Recall # 68702

Here is a brief synopsis of the recall:

http://rotaryresurrection.com/2ndgen...lt_recall.html

Go to any Mazda dealer. They are required to repair the seatbelts during the entire lifetime of the vehicle.

Despite a previous repair, the passenger side belt started failing in my car last month. The dealer ordered the parts from Japan and replaced the entire assembly on both sides once again......

So yes, they still do the repair, free of charge.

I had my passengerside one replaced about a year ago at the dealership. - free of charge

They did not offer to change it to manual, and I doubt that they are going to offer that to you. In fact I had to sign a waiver that they were not responsible for broken panels (a-pillars, etc.) because they are so old, and they didn't want to replace them.

They can't.

A) Because they're legally prohibited from altering the original system and,

B) It's not a simple swap, certainly beyond the scope of normal dealer operations.

if the dealer is good --- they will not ask you to sign a wavier. They & Mazda knows that most of the time those pillars will break, first off its old + some parts are stupid tight and when you pull it the thing just breaks off.

I know one dealership's tech he told me that almost every repair will cost Mazda at least a thousand bucks simply because 90% of the time those pillars break + the rail and motor cost which is couple hundred already + its major PITA to replace the stupid track(labor cost)

and again, no dealerships are willing to take the risk of being sue from swapping those belts to Manual ones.

Are the red and blue interior trim pieces even still available? I thought all you could still buy new were the more common black pieces. Maybe that's why some dealerships are looking for owners to sign waivers.

In 1998 or so when I had my previous S5 GTU's belts fixed by a dealership under warranty for the first time, they broke the a-pillar trim and just left it hanging by the one clip that wasn't broken. I went back in to complain to the service manager and agreed to order me the new parts without any resistance like they sort of expected to see me come back in. I guess they were hoping maybe I wasn't going to notice?

The seatbelt warning lamp is switched at the receiver (the part you plug into).
The receiver neither knows nor cares what type of seatbelt you have.

If your warning light is on, check the switch/connector at the base of the receiver.
