automatic seatbelt problems

I have a 90 GTU with automatic retracting seatbelts. The drivers side doesnt work anymore, and I was wondering if anyone knew if you could replace them with manual seatbelts from another year. I called mazda and they estimated about 600 for parts and labor to fix.

Thanks

First off the dealer knows crap. Your seat belts are covered by a life of the vehicle warranty. See Mazda recall notice link below. Since they claimed ignorance, I'd suggest you print out the notice, bring it to them and ask them how soon they can schedule the warranty covered replacement.

Sorry I feel like an ****. Simply do not know how I let that happen. My intent was to have it for myself. Anyway, The thread below thanks to Center of the Universe. Scroll down abot for his second installment which is the one in PDF.

Not stupid here really. I'll be damned if I can figure what happened. Did a search, since my link was corrupted. copied the url to a document (like I always do) and it screwed up. Try this, my apologies for making this more complicated than it should have been.

Before the upgrade a few weeks ago, it used to be ~/forum/.. , but it looks like they got rid of the subdirectory and ran the rx7club.com straight into the forum section - if you remove "forum" off the URL, the link should work...

I'm almost possitive mazda covers your seat belts for the life of the car. I should cost you nothing to have them fixed

Just an idea for you before you take your car to the dealer.

You might want to consider removing the trim your self. And take it to the dealer that way. The plastic is rather brittle. Most likely you will take more care taking it off. I did that with mine.

However, maybe you can find out if they would replace the trim if the broke it. If they would i would say leave it alone and hope they break it so you can get new trim The only downside is that piece won't be faded and might look dumb.

Mazda WILL fix the seatbelt. I have taken 2 of my RX-7s there and had the seatbelt fixed for free. It is covered because of a safety issue the dealer must stand behind. All you need to tell them is that there is a recall on the seatbelts!

Go here and follow the instructions for recalls pertaining to your car: >http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr.../tsbsearch.cfm

As suggested, take a copy of the printout with you. I would *NOT* rely on a dealer to accept word of mouth, since more than half are dense and know absolutely nothing!

awesome. Thanks for the letter. Im going to the dealer and shoving it in their damn faces. If they dont fix it i can call NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION and get their asses in trouble.
