ATTN: AutoX er's!

I think the world is about to end - I just got a sponsorship opportunity and need to get an idea what to ask for.

(Next year is a 14-event season all across Ontario)

Next year I'll need:

1) Good rubber and wheelsh (about $1400)
2) Either "back to stock" suspension and bushings or "In Class" upgrades (about $2k)
3) High-Flow exhaust ($1200)

What would give me the best bang for the buck in an AutoX?

I'm going to be bringing my knife to a gunfight on Saturday at a shootout on Saturday, but I want to get better next year. Mods are in the sig.

Thanks

JW

I did the suspension first on mine and then half way through the season added Kumho V700's. The tires gained me 2 sec on an average course compare to street tires. : The shocks and springs do make a big difference, but the exhaust would be the last thing to do.

Like they said, tires. Either Kumhos or Hoosiers. Hoosiers will outgrip the Kumhos on some surfaces, but the Kumhos seem to be more consistent over all surfaces and conditions. Look for a good set of Konis after you get the tires.

Have a shop make an exhaust for you. $1200 for an exhaust is crazy..... especially for a non turbo car.

I would run a single mandrel bent 2 1/2" exhaust into a Magnum RACE muffler (Dynomax/Walker manufatures it). It is a straight thru design. I couldn't see it costing you more than $400 at the most. $250 sounds about right as the muffler is only $50.

You should upgrade from 4 lug to 5 lug for the better brakes. Your 4 lug brakes won't hold up under the abuse of Auto Xing and the rotors will probably warp as they are non vented. 205/15's all the way around should work out nicely.

Contact TriPoint Engineering or Mariah Motorsports for tire/rim recommendation. You can get rims/tires purely for Auto Xing that don't look like killer rims.... but are super light.

We're doing a group buy on the enkei RPO1, PM me if interested. These wheels in a 16" are cheap as hell. You need to figure out what class you are going to compete in first. Then you can decide to upgrade your wheels, if staying in stock class.

I would upgrade your struts to Koni's or Tokiko illuminas and obviously retain the stock springs or get a set from a TurboII, might be a higher spring rate. Then you should retain a wheel that is nearly identical to your stock wheel's dimensions, might get be able to use a 15, not sure if they'll really notice with the change in boltpattern. Upgrade to 5 lug too, that will give you a lot more options for upgrade in the near future as well.

TIRES,TIRES,TIRES. Upgrading merely struts and tires will amaze you.

PM me if you need anything.

Good Luck,

Rishie

Dude, you are going to NEED a set of VOLK TE-37's...16x8 5x114.3 ++38mm offset is perfect for you...oh wait I have a brand new set and am selling them... J/k...well actually, I'm not kidding about selling a brand new set of Volks, but you don't NEED them for auto-x'ing(although they'd be nice)

I'm not sure how your classes go but I'd upgrade your brakes and wheels.

you've got a base model, didn't they have non vented disc all the way around?

go turbo brakes and lighter wheels.

1. better brakes and wheels
2. suspension/bushings
3. exhaust but get a garage made version for cheap

Thumbs up

Thanks guys!

The vote is in and the winner is wheels and tires.

That's what I was thinking - I took an 86 base out for a spin at another AutoX in the fun runs and he had a good set of rubber on and it made a huge difference.

So far I can stop real quick, but I'm overpowering the tires - fun, but frustrating.
