anyone here with an automatic?
I have an 89 gtu w/auto and I wanted to see if anyone else's acts like mine. In a nutshell, it shifts back and forth from 4th to 3rd way to often. With the cruise on 60 the instant you get to any kind of incline in the road it shifts down, then 3 seconds later it upshifts, then down again. Also the shift from 1st to 2nd is very hard. And it will not upshift in any gear until about 5500 rpm unless you let off the gas, then after the shift and you get back on the gas, it shifts down again! Is this "normal"? And yeah I know...should have found a manual trans.

I used to have one before I swapped it for a more user friendly 5spd. Most auto trannys work on the same principles and I've worked on some before, not too in depth though. For your problem, I'd first check and make sure the fluid level is full (but not over full). Improper fluid level is the most common cause of auto transmission problems and can lead to internal damage. Check the color of the fluid and see if it smells burnt. Should be pinkish or redish i color. It shouldn't be dark brown or black like coffee with no cream and sugar.
Next check and make sure that the vacuum hose going from the engine to the trannys vacuum modulator is hooked up on both ends and that it doesn't have any small holes in it.
There is a filter that is accessible when you remove the pan. If you remove the pan, check and see if there is a magnet in the pan. If it is, see if there are large metal chunks stuck to it. Small, fine shavings are ok, large chunks are bad, huge chunks with part number stamped on them are real bad.

yeah as far as the fluid goes I took it to a trans shop and they flushed out the old. the level is correct and looks and smells good. I am just trying to see if anyone else with an auto can say whether or not theirs acts the same.

I checked for codes yesterday by grounding the blue pin. The hold light came on for a few seconds and went off. I guess that means no real problems. When yours acted up what did it do?
