anyone ever noticed this?

You know what I've noticed from day 1 of owning my car? If it's in 5th gear, and I gas it, the shifter moves forward, it's even visible how much it moves. It might do this in all gears, but it's only noticable in 5th. Does this happen to anyone else? More importantly, could this ever present a problem (I can't think of any reason why, but.....)?
This is kind-of a stupid topic, but I'm just curious.

Never happened to me. Although now that I put my mazdatrix shifter in I can spin it side to side a little bit. Im thinking I should take it out here one day and check and make sure I put all the new bushings back in right but im really lazy. Ive been meaning to do it ever since I put it in but well like I said im lazy

I've seen that happen before. It also happened in my volvo, which was an automatic. Also happens in my Ford F150 manual.

I would take a look at your engine and tranny mounts. and shifter bushings.

This happens to nearly every car on the road. Its called TORQUE. A twisting action that makes you go. Look at the shifter on any manual tranny'd car and step on and off the gas. Betcha it moves. The engine and transmission move when you get on and off the gas.

Sorry for the sarcasm, couldnt hold back.

If you think there is excessive play on the shifter when you're stopped, then as Scott says, you may need to check/replace your shifter bushings. If it just moves when you accelerate/decelerate, it's nothing to worry about.

yeah, the shifter shakes pretty good going over bumps, and some at idle too.
Obviously it's caused by torque, I was just wondering if this was normal, since my other car is FF, so you can't feel any movement through the linkages.

At idle my shifter kind of bobs up and down like it's dancing. Never forward or back though. I think my FC has the Funk music in it's veins.

It's the forces exerted on the shifter by the gears, caused by torque. If you are interested sign up for a mechanical engineering program and take lots of dynamics classes... you can learn all aboot it!
