Any shortcuts to break upgrades?

I have seen a few pictures of fc3s with fd3s calipers and possibly rotors too.

Now. I use to own a 86 300zx turbo ( HELL of a car!), anyways you could put the 90-96 TT rotors and 4 piston calippers with only a few washers needed to center the caliper better on the rotor.

Any knowlege on this subject would be great!

Model? Year?

Many FC's already come with 4 piston brakes, and use the same brake pads as the FD so there is not much of a need to waste your time and money.

Now if you have a base model, with single piston front brakes and solid rear rotors... then there is a bit of an upgrade using the 4 piston brakes found on the Sport/GXL/Turbo/Convertibles/88 GTU and 89-90 GTUs (note the small "S"- don't confuse with the 89-90 GTU).

The stock vented brakes that come on the models mentioned above are excellent brakes. With upgrades like pads, lines, and racing fluid, they are good for everything except serious competative racing. With only only upgrading the pads for Hawk HPS or similar they are more than enough for anything you can possibly see on the street.
That said, if you want to run the FD calipers, I think there are several other threads on this. I don't recall if there are any writeups or not, though. Do an advanced search in the 2nd gen section only and search for "fd* calipers" or "fd* caliper upgrade" The * is neccesary since the search function won't search for 2 letter words without it.

the fd calipers are a different casting, but they use the same pads, and caliper pistons etc etc, so i dont think they are really an upgrade vs the t2/vert/gxl brakes.

my car is an 87 with 4lugs... so a five lug conversion to either the newer FC or FD would be a suitable upgrade right?

Yes. 5 lug > 4 lug.

As far as everything I've read on the topic says, you cannot use FD rotors on the FC because the offset on them is much different. At least you'd end up having to fabricate brackets to make it work (to get the calipers in the right place), if it could even be made to work at all (interferance issues). It's not a simple bolt on like on the 300ZX, Mazda actually redesigns stuff from generation to generation ;-).
