Any NA tuning FAQ's/How-to's?

Almost everything I see is for the T2's. Can anyone reccomend any good sources for info on tuning NA's?

Searching gets me lots of Turbo tuning stuff, but I don't know how much of that is usefull to me.

My S5 is my first sports car, so any newbie tuning faq's/how-to's would be usefull too.

how much money are you going to spend?
How much power are you looking to get?
do you have to pass smog?

I want to take it slow to start. I want to learn how the car works before I mod it to hell. I don't really care about numbers yet. I may later.

After I give it a tune up up once to pass smog, I never have to test again. I love living in a rural area sometimes.

i found the BEST way for me to learn about the rotary was to tear one apart and look EVERYTHING over real close. if you can get your hands on a blown engine do it!! you'll learn so much more about how exactly everything works. once you know the engine inside and out, with a little brain power you'll be able to tell what everything else does (maybe not the emissions stuff, but most everything else). if you can't, get as much reading material on it (ie. factory service manuel) as you can. ask those who have rebuilt engines about the inner workings of the rotary. the point being to get AS MUCH information as you can on it. once you know how everything works, you'll know what types of mods will be good for the performance you want, and which ones aren't. for example, if you want to make BIG power numbers, forced induction is the way to go. or if you want a weekend autocrosser, simple bolt ons would be better than going all out.

Found in the archive: How to make a beefy NA
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...threadid=31410

EDIT: I read mod an NA instead of tune. There might be some tuning tips in here, I dont remember.

I would start off making sure everything is tuned up right and the cats are not clogged, If you are not worried about smog go with a header to a cat back exhaust this should pick up the most power.

Before you get all into the details of modifying your car let me ask you this. What do you plan to do with the vehicle? Auto-X, road race, or just a street car? This information is valuable when decided the modification path that is right for you.

Street Car first, because I'm not sure what is available in my area. I'm going to the meeting of the local SCCA club on monday, and I'll ask around there, but mostly what I'm looking for in the short term is to have a car that I can drive everyday, and have some fun with. I'm not intrested in dragracing, and I'm not into the Xtrme PoWaH....I've got a friend with a T2 that has that base well covered. Iv'e had this car about 2.5 weeks, and this is my first sports car. I want to take it kinda slow.

That's why I was asking more about tuning than modding.

Sounds good. Then if I were you I would do the basics and just drive the car and enjoy it for a while.

Basics:
- New plugs and wires
- oil change w/filter
- drain and replace the coolant with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water
- check and replace if necessary your belts
- drain and replace your transmission and rear end fluid (an over looked item by many people)
- check and replace tires if bald with something more sporty
- check and replace if necessary the breaks
- bleed the break system with new fluid (I would pick up some speed bleeders at this time as well)
- and lots of cleaning supplies

Then just drive and enjoy your car. Get a feel for it before you start to do anything major. I think a lot of people get head over heals in modifications right away with out taking time to become acquainted to the car. Plus if you leave it stock you can run in a stock classification for SCCA to build up your skills before you move to a street prepared or modified class.

Will the FSM tell me how often to do things like fluid changes? I know about how often to change the oil, but I don't know on anything else. I've skimmed the FSM on FC3S.org, and when the tax refund comes back I'm ordering one from mazdatrix.
