most of the time parts stores are idiots the slave mounts differently so they are different.
they are however the same bore size so you could easily buy a rebuild kit for the slave and fix it that way. and just get a small brake cylinder bore to clean it up.
my advice find another parts store.

I ended up buying new slave and master, worked first time.
Buy the new Slave and Master, not the rebuild kit.

^ Good idea.
The mounting bolts on the cylinder are located in a different place, but other than that they are the same. Therefore, the rebuild kits are the same, but the fully-assembled parts are different.

Hey...Cut it out!

I am not an expert in fluid dynamics by any means, but if the SC's bore is the same and they both use the same MC, it means that both F044 (TII) and FB01 (NA) slave cylinders are moving the exact same distance when the clutch pedal is pushed.
I have mistakenly used a NA slave on a TII clutch and it does work. However, it was an unknown brand and unknown condition slave cylinder which failed recently. I would presume its failure was due to the extra load of the ACT HDSS clutch and that it was not a Mazda slave cylinder. Would I knowingly do so again? No, but I think there is a perfectly logical reason for the extra volume in the F044 Slave Cylinder. Otherwise, Mazda would have used the FB01 version on all FCs to reduce costs.
A stock S4T2 pressure plate requires 1232 lbs of force to be disengaged, while a S4NA one needs 1078 lbs. In all, the Total Assist Ratio for the entire clutch system is about 36:1 (6.25 for pedal, 1.44 in hydraulics and ~4 on the clutch fork). Since the SC travel on both NA & TII are presumably the same, the TII would require more force on the pedal than the NA does. NA needs 30lbs, TII needs 34lbs.
Since they both use the same FB01 Maser Cylinder (0.625"/15.9mm bore), the same FB01 Slave Cylinder Rebuild Kit (Piston, Spring, Seal & Boot), the same pushrod (H005-41-341), have the same 0.75"/19.05mm bore and the same stroke length based on the mounting ears' position. All of the parts related to the Master Cylinder and Pedal Assembly are identical between the two as well. The only differences between the two systems are:
Hardline (yet the fittings are the same)
Flex Hose (yet the fittings are the same)
Hardline to Flex Hose Attachment Bracket on Firewall
Slave Cylinder Body (yet the fittings are the same)
So my question to the community is: What is that extra volume on the TII F044 Slave Cylinder used for?
