What are these parts? They are in the passenger side upper corner of the engine bay. I have notice a few people running without them and I was just wondering what they were and what they did.

The black canister on the left is the charcoal canister(emissions) and I think it removes fumes from the gas in the tank. The other one looks like the wiper motor, but I have no clue.
Edit: Beat me to it. So what exactly does the Charcoal canister do?

Charcoal can keeps the fuel tank vent from makign your car stink liek a shell station.
The cruise control actuator (above the sub-zero assist tank) actuates cruise
The tank holds a bunch of fluid that does nothing even when it worked
And the windshield wiper motor motors your windshield wipers.....................

Sweet. Well my cruise control has never worked at all so can I just remove that motor and the fluid tank?
I think it would probably be a good thing to keep my wiper motor. And I should probably keep the charcoal canister for now. lol.

That bolt on the far right side of the yellow circle is attached to a ground wire, that judging by the way it's hanging probably isn't hooked up at the other end.
Edit: neither is the brake booster line, I'm guessing there's no engine in the car in that shot.

the cold start assist. Mazda was doing some acid and thought hey we should inject small about of coolant into the lower intake manifold because coolant doesnt freeze this should keeo the fuel from freezing. I believe they may have even had a TSB on this not working at it can be removed. If you remove it like so many of us have you should block off the holes in the lower intake manifold. I think you can just remove the tank and leave whatever it is on there and be alright. I do know that if you remove the part thats on the lower intake maniifold there are two holes that go into the lower intake manifold that will need to be blocked off or they will be a vacuum leak.

ps your cruise control doesnt look like its even hooked up... probably why it doesnt work. Theres a cable that runs to the throttle body its next to the throttle cable

Yeah, that cable was hooked to the TB when I pulled the motor. I just removed it when I removed the actual throttle cable. So if I completely remove it, it wont cause a problem not having that secondary throttle cable hooked up? Is there any way i can remove the bracket that holds that secondary cable?

The sub-zero start assist's job was to... help start the engine in sub zero temperatures. At -16*C (3.2*F), the temperature sensor in the oil pan is triggered to inject a mixture of 90% antifreeze/10% water into the engine when the key is put into the run. The position reasoning for doing this was simple: its an easily injectable fluid that doesn't freeze that helps to build compression. You could do the same thing with oil... but cold oil is a lot harder to pump, and burns to form some nasty pollutants. Here's a big shocker, too: the system actually does work. Try it next time its really cold out, if you live in such a climate. I've heard of people pouring coffee down their carb throats from their morning thermos to get their car to start on race day. Really helps start a big bridgeport.
The TSB to remove it was not because the system did not work, it was because the system caused vacuum leaks, and since the systems were so rarely used, it was cheaper to tell the Mazda Mechanics to remove it than to replace any parts. Think about it: why would the TSB tell mechanics to remove a part simply because it doesn't work? Mazda is out to make money, and they're not going to pay the labour to have unnecessary parts removed... however, they will pay them to remove it rather than pay them to fix the unit AND for labour.

Scathcart - right on the money, saved me some typing.
OP, instead of removing the cruise, see if you can fix it when you're bored (after you get the engine in and running. I myself like to have everything working. The FSM will help you troubleshoot - could be even just a dirty main or pedal switch.
