oh buddy its super easy - just try it
loosen the adjuster bolt, unbolt the main mount bolt, and POW thats pretty much it (dont lose that big fat washer for the mount though)
its easy man - serious..

yes disconnect the battery. lossen the adjustment bolt/nut
than lossen the MAIN bolt on the other side of the alt. like he said dont lose the big fat washer.. you'll need it. it should take about 5 min to get your alt off. it's super easy

Or just take a picture of it before you take it apart then use that picture to help you get it back together, not really anything to it though, 2 bolts is all and the connector.

so.. what happens if you DONT disconnect the battery?
(other than risking fire if one of the power wires leading to the alternator output post falls onto a ground out engine - what other reprocussions are there?)

not neccessarily... The fuse might not pop. I know I was working on testing my old one in a former vehicle. (1-wire GM) and the fuse did not blow even though the lead got out of my hand and landed on the intake manifold. (lotsa sparks) I was more surprised that it made a connection than it didn't pop a fuse.
My point? Pull the damn ground! It takes all of 30 seconds to reprogram your radio and is a good time to clean the terminals on the battery anyways.
