almost overheating/coolant problem...HELP!!

ok so i installed a new koyo radiator into the car and have filled it with coolant then after running it for a lil bit, the add coolant light came on....so i figured i just didnt add enough and bleed it right so i added more....now after filling it with three whole containers i figure it has to be pretty full......
i run it again and no add coolant light but an almost non stop flow from the overflow tank spewing onto the pavement
so then i figure i just added way too much....
but it has continually done this everytime i run it
and now the add coolant light is coming on again......
why is it continually dumping coolant thru the overflow?????

also what does the little light on the stock temperature gauge mean?? this is an 87 T2...neither of my previous cars have had a little light on the temp gauge
so im unsure of what it means when it lights up

Does your car have ABS?
If so, the ABS light is in the usual "COOLING FAN" light location (bottom left most position) in the warning cluster.
Mazda moved the COOLING FAN light to that little light by the temp gauge.
If this light goes on, it means there's a malfunction with your stock cooling electrical fan.

well the car came equipped with ABS but i removed it.....so that would explain the light
what do u mean by stock cooling electrical fan???
i thought the only fan was the belt driven one.....
there was a little electrical fan attached to the a/c condensor that i removed but im pretty sure that was ok to do

Yes, that little fan in the front of the A/C condensor core is that one.
If your temps every hit above 225F, then the light will come on telling you something is "wrong" with that fan.

I'm going to guess that your radiator cap is bad?

Was the car ever overheated?

Typically on a cold start if coolant is PISSING into the overflow thats a sign of a blown coolant seal.........

How many miles are on the engine?

The overflow bottle constantly spewing out coolant is a common sign of a coolant seal going out in your engine.

Also I would think it owuld be hard over filling your cooling system.
pretty much with a cold engine you fill it to the very top and that's it.

Did you remember to run the heater after filling it? Air can get trapped in the heater and will make the car appear to eat coolant(since the level was full but now looks lower because the trapped air was released)

Now another culprit could be a bad radiator cap. Although I thought this and my car died of coolant seal a couple months later after I replaced the cap. So replacing the cap may just mask the blown seal.

im just throwing up some seuggestions, did you run the heater fan? when i took my radiator cap off the seal was all bad and started to fall apart. something might have fell in into the radiator/engine cloggin it. try draining from the engine block yo see if your coolant is flowing thoughtout the system.

oh and is it possible to replace the seal on the cap?

well the car doesnt spew coolant all the time....but i had put like 4 bottles of coolant into it.....
the car has around 120K miles on it.....
if the coolant seal is bad does that mean its time for a rebuild??? or is this something i can do otherwise???
ill try replacing the radiator caps too ig uess but they both look fairly new defnitly not oem ones i dont believe

also someone told me i needed to *burp* the radiator to get trapped air out of the engine....and this was why i was having overflowing of coolant...because there was big pockets of air which were causing the levels to rise and pour out into the overflow
is this be something i should have done?

boy do i feel kinda silly....

so i pulled off my radiator cap to see about gettin a replacement.....and i realized that i had accidently switched the radiator cap and the fill neck cap
which is why all the coolant was going into the overflow because there was nothing stopping it from going thru the tube since the fill neck cap is just a cap and my actual radiator cap wasnt doing anything on the filler neck

Does "bad radiator cap" count?
Good job figuring it out!
