im not quite sure what this is. i looked in the haynes manual and the best thing that resembled this was a air supply solonoid. i need to get the gasket for this puting engine back together and cant figure out what it is. my car is an 88 t2 and it came off the uim. it also has 2 very small holes in it. sensor in hand with the 2 holes in the background (bare metal )shiny).
It is the air supply something or other. I went standalone with no emissions. Its my opinion that it must be left on to cover the small holes underneath. I'd like to get some more info as well.
Like the free, online FSM says, it is used for power steering. When the wheel is turned the pwr steering inputs to the ECU which in turn opens that air supply valve to bump the rpms up due to the extra load the pwr steering puts on the engine.
Gasket material from the auto store plus a exacto knife will make a gasket cheap and quick.

sorry i guess i forgot the real question air supple valve is what is shown in your picture not to be mixed up with the air control valve)secondary air) or the air bypass solenoid valve(used for the accelerated warm up)
