You can unplug the harness at the ECU and push it through the firewall, and then coil it on top of the engine when pulling it. It's easier to disconnect and keep track of what goes where when the whole shebang is out of the car. it's even better when you're putting it back in, you have better access to all of the plugs when the engine is out of the car, minimizing the chances of missing something. All you have to do then is drop it in and run the harness back through the firewall.

I just got through doing this myself. It wasn't as tough as I thought it was going to be I left my transmission in whcih for the first time that I've ever done anything like this before was kind of tough. You will need another set of hands when you put it back in taking it out was a piece of cake.
*if you can or haven't in a while get a new clutch might as well!
*Get new gaskets or washers especially for the oil lines.
*+1 one for unplugging the harness and push it through the firewall.
*When taking off bolts use the baggies but if possible put the bolts on the items after you take them off so you have them in the proper order.
*Inspect everything, I had to replace several hoses and had to repair broken connectors.
*Plan your moves and keep yourself oganized and have fun it was actually a blast!

I never though about pushing the harness through and doing it that way

You don't have to pull the manifolds to unplug the injectors.
You don't have all sorts of little connectors all over the place, it's three or four inside the car and one at the wiper motor.
After that, just curl it up, zip tie it to the intake out of the way and lift the engine out.
