ABS - Keep it or chuck it?

Alright, on the S5 TII I just got the ABS computer was removed because some part was broken which would cost ~$700 to replace from a dealer. (Dunno what the part was). Anyhow, I'm wondering if it would be worth it to fix the ABS or remove the entire system (remove the gears and whatnot on the axles to reduce unsprung weight). I've heard nothing good about the ABS on FD's so I'm guessing the FC ABS is no better?

i'd say keep it if you drive it hard, or on the street a lot, unless you can practice enough with no abs to brake without it. i've never had abs on any of my cars, and unless you want learn to brake at the limit you should keep it.

I just wanna remove the components on the axles, looks like I could save 1/2lbs. at each corner, which sorta translates to 1lb at each corner...

If you need an abs pump or ecu I have both I will sell cheap.

IF you have abs and it works okay, leave it be. If the pump fails and you cant find a replacement, then ditch it. You need all the hardlines from a non abs car to do it right. Leave the wheel sensors in place, they are a bastard to try and remove for no gain whatoever.

How much do you want for the ABS pump? I'm assuming that's the part that's broken, but I'll need to double check.

the abs does actually flat spot the tires on the race track, but it probably makes braking easier at the limit

I dont know, probably 35 shipped. Came from a 90 model with 78k, did not appear to leak. A leaky abs pump is the common failure, where fluid is found all over the unit and the framerail beneath. I also have the computer from the same car I'd throw in for 5 more bucks.

LOL, you want to remove a magnetic pick up that prob weighs 3 onces. And good luck removing that ABS ring that is on the hub.

I'd just fix the abs if I were you. People think the non abs RX-7s can brake good until they feel properly working abs system. I loved having it.

I just replaced my leaky ABS pump, and it was worth the trouble IMO. Bleeding it was actually easy! Now that it actually works, I'm impressed with the system. It reacts quickly and the pump cycles fast enough for me.

haha braking in the ABS car feels better because most people cant properly brake in a non abs car, at the track my car sounds like it has abs, when i brake hard for the corners, it emits a slight squeak then just grip, just good pedal control that comes from learning to use the brakes properly.

keep the abs, especially if its a daily driven car.

I've had two ABS-equipped cars and I know my ABS doesn't work: A. because it slides, and B. because I know the computer was removed. Anyhow, RotaryResurrection, I'm interested in the pump. Next week I'll send you a PM about it, I have to sort out whether or not I'm spending all my money on an MR2 and then I'll get back to you about the pump.
