Question ABS, do I have it??

so i saw some other thread in the lounge or something talking about abs problems on another type of car and i was wondering if i had abs. and if i do what would it feel like when it kicks in?

i remember once i ran through a yellow light at like 55mph or so and just after the light a bunch of cars were slowing down because there was a schoolbus with its stupid stop lign flashing letting kids out. and i had to slam on the brakes and it was a little wet and i slid for a good 5 feet or so with all the wheels locked up and the car started to go a little sideways so i let off the brake for a second corrected the steering while re-aplying the brake (so basicly my foot was my abs)

if i would have blindly slammed on the brakes and waited for the abs to kick in, i would have been rear-ending this new camry with my passenger door.

so should i have abs in my car and if so how do i tell if it is working?

Look for a big metal box onthe passenger side of the firewall with a bunch of brakelines going into it. If its there youhave ABS. If not, you don't.

Does your car make a whirring sound when you first take off in the morning? If so, thats the abs activating.

Also check the fuse box under the hood. If there is a fuse in the abs spot, you have it. Or, slam on the brakes at 120 mph and find out the fun way.

There is a nice ABS warning light which comes on everytime you turn the ignition switch on.But I agree with menace,if you had it and it works you would not be asking the question.

thanks for the input, i think after work i will try the "slam on the brakes test" in the parking lot accross the street, along with some drifting. it's a huge parking lot and it is raining right now, so i think taking it up to 50 and slamming on the brakes should answer my question.

unless someone installed ABS in your car...i don't think any non-turbo FC came with ABS. "maybe" the GTUs, but i'm pretty sure none have it...

Uh, I think a better way would be to pop your hood. Follow any of the lines from your master cylinder to your proportioning valve. Then follow another one. If it goes across to the passenger side of your engine bay into another pump looking thing, you've got ABS. If it goes straight to a wheel well or down the transmission tunnel, you don't.

Looking under the hood doesn't get the cops called one you

yeah, but its dark, cold and wet outside, and it gives me an excuse to go and slide my car around a parking lot

and i highly dought the cops would come before i see security, and they drive a van so i think i'm pretty safe.

thanks though
