86 Mazda RX7 NA problems

kk. Recently the car that i have been working on has been having issues. The car is an 86 rx7 na 5spd. The car sometimes makes a noise coming from the transmission that sounds almost like the the input shaft on the transmission is flopping around. It only does this somtimes and goes away after driving a short distance (sometimes as short as 50 ft).

Also I am thinking that the thrust bearings may be going and that is causing movment and causing the noice from the internal parts moving excessively.

Any ideas???

Sure its somewhere in the clutch weather being the throwout bearing, pilot bearing, release bearing, or the clutch itself. Just go buy a cheap rebuild kit.

When does it make these noises? Use this as a guide: http://www.mazdatrix.com/g2.htm

it has a new pilot bearing, pilot bearing seal, throw out bearing, clutch is in good shape, transmission was just swapped out because the other one was doing the same thing.....

It only does it when the care is in neutral when the car first starts..... you can rev it up and it will keep doing it but usually once you start to drive it then it stops.

Also if you rest your foot on the clutch just enough to relieve some pressure it will stop doing it but you can still hear the transmission turning.....

Also I think this has something to deal with the hesitation that the car has if you hit the gas suddenly and why it feels like the clutch is slipping every once in a while but as soon as you give it more gas it stops....

warped rotor face, ok maybe not as i have only seen that on S5/6.

try to isolate the noise by starting it in gear, with the clutch in, clutch out, accessory belts removed, etc.

From what I have been told (the car is my brother in laws and only does it when he has driven it more than 200 miles and as soon as I get it in it will do it once and then after that never does it again) The car does it with the clutch engaged in neutral, was doing it while the car was driving and bogging down the engine to the point that it had to be pushed out of the road this last time and was actually causing the car to bounce this previous time.

The only belts on it is the Alt / water pump belt. Has a double pulley on it.

I can never get this car to do it while it is in my possession and my brother in law has only driven manuals his whole life. I don't know if he is doing something weird because this is his first rx7 and I am not because I learned to drive a manual on my rx7 with a six puck clutch. I am really stumped on this....

Also the break light doesn't wanna turn off..... The cables aren't stretched and the brake fluid is at max level.... Any ideas on that???

Recently my brake light wouldn't turn off either. I found a small screw from "who knows where" that wasn't allowing my e-brake (hand brake) to go all the way down. I am not saying that you have this same off the wall problem... But perhaps the car isn't recognizing that the hand brake is not engaged. Judging by everything else the car is experiencing, this is probably the least of your worries.

Well there is no screw there or anything else blocking it from going down completely. The only thing that I have heard that is similar in sound was when my water pump pully decided to crack on my car but his doesn't seem cracked or loose......

Any other ideas about the brake light or the noise???

you have a unique issue, one we cannot help you with. what you need is to put it up on a lift and check around with a stethescope to try and isolate the noise's location and go from there.

if it is as erratic as you say, i would probably just wait until it fails and then you will have a conclusive result. otherwise hours and hours of warming up and cooling off the car trying to pinpoint the location.

what you're describing isn't a common issue with these cars so it will take hands on diagnostics.
