Question 5k+ rpm = exhaust smoke screen under load?

Ever since I've owned my '86NA its been slow until I replaced my exhaust w/ a RB header and borla catback. I know the 5th & 6th ports dont work, but thats fine for now.

Whats been bothering me as of late is the nice spy-hunter smoke screen that my car makes when I rev past 5000 rpm. It only happens under load, so if I were to rev to 5k+rpm and let the rpm's drop to idle, it wont smoke at all, but say if I were to drive hard it'll smoke quite a bit. The car will also smoke alot even if I'm just holding the rpm's at 5k or more. The smoke is blue and I've been thinking its my oil injection system, but am also thinking its the oil control rings on the side of the rotors. I was thinking that the oil pressure at that rpm range is to much for the oil seals, but I honestly don't know enough about the oil system on the car to make a judgement call on what the issue is.

I've done some searching and came up w/ nothing.

I do plan on replacing the motor once it siezes w/ a turbo engine, but I want to keep this motor running as long as possible.

Thanks for any help!

oil rings all the way. I would do a mtf treatment just to see if it would decrease. Thats not a uncommon prob though.

I think he means the atf treatment. Automatic transmission fluid trick.

Sorry to highjack ur thread. My car smokes everytime I rev it high, I noticed it happens when I'm just parked, don't know bout when I'm drivin. Could this be the same? But the smoke isn't blue its like a really light grey. I have a turboback exhaust with no cat. Is this normal?

Excessive oil burning and consuption.

in the near future?
I'm not really sure. In the near future, maybe just runs dirty and you're putting a quart of oil in every two weeks...

Is the inside of your exhaust tip black as hell? Sounds like you may just be running too rich...

Would someone explain the Automatic transmission fluid trick? Do I add auto tranny fluid to the oil or what?

NO!

You remove the lower plug holes and fill them with a tablespoon of ATF... Then remove the EGI fuse and crank the engine or spin it by hand if possible (with the plugs reinstalled)...

Be wary of the "ATF Trick." When unflooding a motor, some people say to do it.

On the other hand, ATF does eat at some of the internal seals in the motor, so be careful. If I'm doing anything, like the unflood procedure, I just use some oil and put it in the plug holes.

Just food for thought.

The reason you use ATF is because it has a higher viscosity than engine oil... Using engine oil, you run the risk of compromizing the seating of the soft seals...

Personally, I really don't understand why you would put ATF to stop it from smoking. In fact I've never heard of using ATF to treat a smoking problem. I've used it to start a rebuild with low compression before. I suppose if the oil system is really bad it might help an engine on its last legs anyway....But to just start dumping in ATF without investigating other causes.....well I don't know about that.

Yea you're 100% correct... I was only referring to using it to either build compression on a rebuild, or to help start an engine that has been sitting awhile to reduce the chances of damage... ATF won't do a damn thing for bad oil control rings though... A rebuild will though...
