Thumbs down 3rd gear scraping noise?!?!!?

hello

when i shift into 3rd daily driving and im going through third gear i hear a vibrating rattling metal to metal type noise. It happens when i give it gas. It also does it a little bit in 4th but not as loud. Sorry that i couldnt describe the sound very well but its hard to explain. I guess i can almost call it like a controlled metal scraping sound when i put gas in 3rd. Does anyone knwo if this is serious?

thanks

I just replaced my tranny because 3rd gear self-destructed. Mine started with various scraping noises. It eventually died a sudden and violent death 80 miles away from home on the way to a 7 meet. I hope you have better luck than I had.

Mine scraped the entire time it was in gear. Does yours, or does it only scrape when shifting into gear?

it does it when im in 3rd gear. not when im shifting.

It only makes the sound when i apply gas in the gear.

I hope my tranny doesnt go out it only has 70000 orginal miles

Mine does that too, if you're on the gas you hear it, and it sort of "coasts down" when you let off. You have to be accelerating to hear it though, when cruising it's silent. The tranny is a junky one that my shop had gotten with a jspec engine and threw in when my original tranny decided to blow up.

has anyone else noticed any weird noises?

It really bothers me. Do i just need a tranny rebuild?

How long have you been rolling with your tranny like that Gene? As long as mine lasts a good while i cant complain.

Thanks

From what I hear, its more cost efficient to replace than to rebuild a tranny.

I have something similar happening with my tranny. When I shift into 5th and only in fifth sometimes it will scrape as if I wasn't pushing the clutch all the way but I 'am. Also there is a weird high pitched noise coming from my tranny that goes away only when I step on the clutch. Other than that is always sounds even at idle. Haynes manual says it's most likely the clutch release bearing. Anyone know if this is a hard procedure to do?
Thanks

Jon

it involves takeing off your transmission (obviously).. I didn't find the job too hard when i did my clutch, although others might. it's time consuming, expect to spend an entire weekend doing it your first time. just a note, though: If you're going to take off the transmission, replace the ENTIRE clutch, including the pressure plate, clutch disc, and throwout bearing (clutch release bearing).. for the price of a clutch (~150 @ advanced auto for me), it's a pain-in-the-*** that you don't want to have to deal with later.
