1990 vert

Allright, there's a rx7 being sold at the dealership down the street. Its a 1990 vert. It has 79k miles. Automatic. Nice system. Looks decently maintained.

Bad things:
The covertible top is torn in one area (back left). Probably a one inch tear. The top seems to be not sealed all the way near the bottom, where it connects to the car, near the rear windshield. I assume this can be fixed. Price?

Seems like the right muffler/exhaust area is rusted. so rusted that pieces are falling off, and possibly rusted all the way through. Left muffler/exhaust area is fine, but a bit rusted. Does the 1990 rx7 come with dual exhaust? If not, that would explain why one of them is rusted, perhaps its the original?

Automatic.

Good things:
Only 79k miles (alot less than others)
Nice sound system
decently maintained
Red

Ok, now the questions. How much does it cost to fix the top, and what are the chances of it leaking with the parts that I mentioned torn/not sealed?
What is the problems associated with a rusted exhaust area, and how much does it cost to fix?
If I were to replace the tranny with a manual, whats the estimated cost on that

And the last question: How much should I pay?

Thanks

I payed 500 for my new top to be installed a few years ago. Oh yeah don't pay over a 1000. No one wants a auto.

Yeh, I'd hold out to try and find a manual.

The Auto 'Vert is like the slowest 7 ever made.

The RX-7s do come with dual exhaust stock. There are threads around on how to put a 5 speed into your auto if you really like that particular 7.

My advice is to just read a whole lot about these cars before you really invest.

Con: The auto tranny is the weak link - & most expensive to fix.
Pro: On an automatic, the engine is less likely to be abused.

Look carefully for any signs of smoke or past overheating.

I'm not really looking for a fast car. This is gonna be my first car, so I'm not looking to kill myself, or my car I know the vert has a hard top and a soft top, and the hard top is fine, but the soft one needs to be replaced/patched/resealed. Is it possible just to patch the tear and to reseal the other parts? Sorry for asking so many questions, lol, I just want to make sure I love my rx7!

Thats what this forum is for, asking questions. (Dispite what some people may think :-p)

If you own a convertable and dont have enough $ to buy a whole new top, black RTV sealent is your friend.

I've sewn up my tears and patched it with black RTV, it has yet to fail on me.

Its not a true dual however it does help and looks cool!

I would also recomond staying away from an auto, more headaches than they are worth.

Tops are easy to patch until funds are aviliable, and on mine I have not put it up for a week or so.

As everyone said it's better to stay away from auto. When I was looking for a FC, there was an excellent S5 auto vert but I decided not to go for it after I took a test drive on it.

They wanted 9k for it.......

Although the engine is 2 years old, the tranny is 1.5 years old, and the paint job is 2 years old. The current owner is the 2nd owner of the car. So it most likely is in good shape, but way out of my price range

NINE THOUSAND???

Holy Batshit man! I paid $3,000 for mine as you see it. And it is a 5-speed. Gorgeous, with factory paint. I added the wheels, a cool grand with tires. If the car was PERFECT and had a manual trans, I would pay $9k. As you describe the car, it is worth about $2,500 on the east coast.

My Vert

Big pic of My car: http://www.geocities.com/skyypilot69/Dsc00011.jpg

For all you guys who 'diss 'verts: My car weighs 2918 pounds now after huge weight reduction. Go put your coupe on a scale, I bet it weighs more. When the old rotary feels like doing its thing it runs a 14.9 1/4 mile, no juice, no turbo! The rotary is dying (again), I hope it can hold on until winter... V-8 conversion this winter, sorry guys but I am tired of the tempermental rotary that only lasts 30K when driven hard. All verts are NOT fat and slow! My car will have FIVE HUNDRED horsepower and FOUR HUNDRED foot-pounds of torque when I am done, and will be totally streetable. And it will sound like a Winston (Nokia?) Cup car.

Don't mess with me, you know how I get!

Uh, to avoid the Geocities BS, cut and paste the link into your browser instead of clicking on the link in this box....

uhhh, It would have to be immaculate and perfect in every way for me to even consider 9k. You could probably buy a beater and put 9k into it and have a whole lot better car IMO.

I paid $1500 for my vert (which was too much), and when it's all said and done I'll have less than 9k in it. I think that's a little out of line personally.

Something to think about -- take bluebook w/ a grain of salt, but I just punched in the basics of your car into bluebook.com and giving you the benefit of the doubt w/ condition as excellent and all of the options, it still only valued at $5k. I dropped the mileage to only 20k just for comparison and it still was only $5ksomething. I think he probably doesn't want to sell it, so put an insane price on it. Tell him to cut it in half and then you'd think about it.
