Smile 1990 Gxl

Hi all, noob here. I've really enjoyed searching the posts, I've found a lot of useful information! A week ago I bought a 1990 GXL with a rebuilt 13b (has about 10k on it) new tranny and a HKS exhaust. The car runs really well except at idle. It idles spiratically (after it warms up it will idle at 200 then up to 1 grand) and sounds like it may be missing. Also when revved to about 3 grand it kind of sputters but above that it is smooth. When under power I don't notice any of this and it is pretty strong. I ordered some NGK plugs (7s and 9s) and wires but was wondering if there was anything else I could do to alleviate the problem? Otherwise it's a great car and I am proud to be among fellow RX7 owners!

I did do a search for these symptoms but I didn't have much luck finding anything specific to my problem. Thanks for the help!

Damn that is clean. Nice job. I love it when the car is left in it's original beauty!

So it's revving up and down AFTER it warms up? Seems Ive seen somethings on the forums lately about this.

Try searching for revving and see what comes up.

Sweet! It looks just like my car, 'cept I'm in the middle of replacing the engine..... I really don't know much about what may be wrong, but the first thing that pops up in my head is check the vac lines..... but you'd probably have bigger problems idling if the a vac line was off....

Here is one of the idle threads in the archive:

Here's another:
http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/articles/idle.html

If you do some searching, you should be able to find out how to set the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). That could be the problem.

OK, I've been reading a lot about the TPS and ways to adjust it and I have all the tools gathered that I will need. I understand that the explanations given are often times geared toward the experienced do-it-yourselfer, but that I am not. My question is, where exactly is the TPS and the wires/leads that I am going to be connecting my meter to? I understand your frustration as I am sure this topic has been driven into the ground, but I am anxious to get this car in top shape.

Thanks again for the help.

Wow, that is the exact twin to my car! With the exception of minor rust spots and the broken mirror on the passenger side that it came with.

I just finished changing the plugs and wires with a minor improvement as a result. The car stull hunts and pops at idle. I am guessing that I still need to tinker with the TPS if I only knew exactly where to find it. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Remember, I know very little about this car, so go easy. I've included a picture of the old plugs. Thanks again guys.

You might also check for Vac leeks and check the engine grounds. Those 2 things can also cause some problems.

Have you downloaded the Factory Service Manual available here?

http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1989_1991/

You should be able to find the TPS location and LOTS more with that manual. It is VERY handy to have around.
