1990 GTUs
Nope.
Try 16-flat for a normal model, closer to 15.7-15.8 for a GTUs, what with the 4.33:1 rear end an all.
But I seriously doubt it's a 1990 GTUs - there were only 100 of 'em made. There's on in Tally (VIN verified). Pretty cool.

Yo,
I'm comin', I'm comin'. Geez, gimme a minute. *grin*
Cut and paste:
Basically, Mazda dominated the IMSA GTU series in the 1980's, so much so that they got bored and tried GTO. To celebrate that dominance, then came up with the GTUs model in 1989 and 1990. Kind of like a Homogolation Special. The little "s" is very important, not to be confused to the GTU model.
The car has been called "The Turbo without the Turbo" and rightfully so: both the TII and GTUs share the same 16" mesh wheels, 4 piston aluminum brakes, aluminum hood (sans scoop), LSD and stiffer suspension/thicker swaybars. But the GTUs got rid of many of the "luxury" or "unecessary" features for the sake of weight reduction and purity of purpose.
They deleted the following:
Sunroof
Power windows
Power door locks
Tilt wheel mechanism
Map pockets
Leather seats
Rear wiper
Air conditioning
If it didn't make the car go faster, or handle, they chucked it. Air conditioning was available as an option.
The car weighs 2802 pounds, vs. the TII's 2987 pounds. The GTUs has a special 4.30 rear end vs. the normal 4.10 that most NA RX-7's came with. This was to get quicker acceleration times and has become very desirable, even for the Turbo guys.
The car came in three colors: Noble White, Blaze Red, and Brilliant Black. The black being the least common color, then the red, then finally the white. The black and red came with black interior, the white with dark blue.
They produced approximately 900-1100 GTUs in 1989, and a verified 100 in 1990. This makes the GTUs the rarest U.S. RX-7 model produced, even rarer than the 1500 10th Anniversary TII's they made in 1988.
Side note: you can tell if it's got the 4.3 rear end because at 80mph it'll be at 4,000rpm.
Congrats to your friend! Any pics? What color?

1990 GTUs
Production run for 1990, verified by John Matras (Color History of the RX-7) thru Mazda Corporate was 100 units.
Rarest RX7's account is accurate. Mazda needed a minimum of 100 factory produced cars to qualify for GTU class. The 1990 GTUs-model is not even really mentioned in Mazda literature, except for a small footnote in the 1990 owners manual. Also- 5th gear was slightly lower ratio than regular GTU ot TII.
Rarest- do you know how many black were made? When I got mine, there was a red one and a black one on the showroom floor- I picked red. Salesman had no idea they were scarce commodity.

Yes, I recently rebuild a black 90 GTUs for a guy in Augusta. I was told there were only about 10 black ones in '90.
I am now rebuilding a 89 GTUs, red for a friend in VA. IT should run this week...another 'S on the street...

mazdamanda: there are other rexes without sunroofs, many base models didn't have them, and I think there is a GXL at a junkyard over here without one.

Yo,
Ron: I don't know how many black ones they made. I've only seen one in person. Lots of white, little red, and a tiny bit of black GTUs out there.
Amanda: You can find sunroofless FC's out there that aren't GTUs, but they are very rare finds. It seems like the 1991 Coupes have fewer sunroofs.
DCmina: Yep, power mirrors.
