1990 FC S5 convertible non-turbo
Hi guys,
Last year i buyed a 1990 S5 convertible with automatic transmission, the car had no engine, later i find an S5 engine for manual transmission, we overhauld the engine, put a flywheel for automatic transmission on it and bild it in the car, the engine turns very whell, but when you shift the auto transm. in D position and you give not extra gas, the engine turns of, when you drive the car ist a bit "shaky" in the autmatic transmission, what could it be ?, does I need some things more for swap a manual transmission engine into a automatic transmission car ?
Regards, Erwin

original S5 drive plate with counterweight.
Erwin
The engine has vibrations between 3500 and 5000 rpm, my Mazda dealer thinks that the flexplate is not the correct one, he reads on mazdatrix that there are counterweights for 146 and 160 HP, who can help us out ?
Regards, Erwin

engine vibrations
I think we have found the problem;
there are diffirent counterweights for the models 86-88 and 89-91, and also again by the 89-91 models depents on the Vehicle Identification Number
model 86-88 front counterweight N326-11-D61A MT + AT
rear counterweight N327-11-521 AT
model 89-91 front counterweight N350-11-D61 MT
N350-11-D61 AT before V.I.N. 708021
N326-11-D61A AT after V.I.N. 708021
rear counterweight N351-11-521 AT
My car's VIN is after 708021, so I need the N326-11-D61A front counterweight which is the same like the 86-88 front counterweight.

engine vibrations
Yes, we have a proverb here that say's, Who surch, those found!
Now the trouble with the engine turns off when you put the auto transmission into D or R, I think there must be something on a automatic transmission engine that pull up the stationary rpm (number of revolutions) when you put the tranny into D or R , who have an idea what we are missing ???

The problem here is that Mazda Belgium, and I think also Mazda Europe never imported RX-7 's with automatique transmission, only manual transmissions, there are 2 RX-7 's with auto trany in Belgium both imported from US, so its very difficult for us to find out what a possible problem is, maybe we must put the cars together and find out what the optical differences are.

I found out in the workshop manual by "intake air system" that the trottle body is different for the Manual Transmission and Automatic Transmission, particular for the water thermovalve who has 2 air hoses for manual transmission and 3 air hoses for automatic transmission, also the clearance for the primary trottle valve is 0.02-0.03 in for M/T and 0.03-0.06 in for A/T, and also a single trottle diaphragm for M/T and double trottle diaphragm for A/T.

RX-7 vibrations
Hi,
finely we found the problem with the vibrations, it was not the counterweights, it was the torque convertor who fits not exact on the exentric shaft from the manual transmission engine, with some rings it fitted and no more vibrations !!! Also we bild the "automatic" throttle body in and no more engine turn of when we shift the transmission in D, R, N,.... we change the oil from the transmission but he turns not real good, but its livable.
Now a couple of little things to do before we offer the car for inspection so we can drive it on the road, hoping for a good summer ;-) The car came original from California.
